Summer was over and school was well underway. Those graduating that year were getting ready for the year to end, and it only started a month ago. They had all fallen back into a routine of school and life with personal stuff outside of school. The school was getting ready for prom and friends were planning the night. People were asking their dates, and every so often one could hear cheers in the halls or outside during lunch. There were some who were excited for the event, and there were some who could care less. And though her mom tried to prove otherwise, Grace was one of the ones who could care less. No one ever showed an interest in asking her, so she never expected for that to happen.
She and her mom had had a long talk about it the night before. Her mom offered to call her sisters to help get her ready, but Grace had declined. If no one asked her, no one asked her and she didn't want to go and sit on the sidelines. Grace was tired of being the rebound. She had her small circle of friends that all felt the same. They had talked earlier that week and agreed to do movie night. So come Monday morning the week before, Grace was surprised when two of her friends stopped her when she arrived at school.
"Grace!" Chloe called. Grace turned to see Chloe and their friend Devon running to meet her. "Guess what?" the girl was barely containing her excitement. "Devon asked me to prom!"
Devon shrugged. "It only made sense rather than spend the night at home while everyone else was out having fun. That and...I have been wanting to ask you out for awhile." He smiled when Chloe blushed.
Chloe squealed as she grabbed Grace's hand. "Maybe if there's still time when we are done at the dance, we can meet you at the house to do movie night. It's still your house right?"
Grace forced a smile and nodded. "Unless I hear differently from Sarah. I'll keep you both updated on where we end up."
Chloe squealed once again as she hugged Grace before taking Devon's hand and running off. Grace sighed. She should have seen this one coming. For the last few weeks now she had been seeing the way that Chloe and Devon looked at each other. Grace would never admit this to anyone, especially her mother, but one day she hoped that someone looked at her like that. Not just from her mother, but her significant other.
