I miss the old days. The days when hosts were people who wore dapper tuxes and elegant gowns, tasked with the glorious duty of entertaining attendees of their swanky parties. It's not that I liked them much though: not the old days, not the people, nor their ritzy events, and certainly not cheesy ass hosts. How can a person smile that damn much all night? Nobody's that happy. Not unless they're on Hollywood's recreational substance of choice.
The thing is, as agonizing as those days were for me, they damn sure beat the hell out of my current set of circumstances. I just became a fully fledged Host about thirty seconds ago. The fingers of my best friends fiancé became my selection of an appetizer about ten seconds later. It's disgusting. I can taste the viscosity of her iron rich blood as it coats the subtle ridges of my tongue. That violent cracking sound must be the gold plating of her engagement ring, or the block of cubic zirconia seated inside, breaking off the edges of my molars. There it is...the pain. I can feel everything. All of my senses work, but I'm not in control. He's the Captain now...or she...whatever the fuck it is, this creature that crawled from the deepest bowels of Mother Earth. She regurgitated vengeance from her gaping jaws to kill us all. We're her virus. They're her antibodies, here to rid her decaying bosom of the pernicious poison called the human race.
I had a good run. I survived long enough to figure it all out: what they are, where they came from, why they're here, and how to stop them. Too bad the information is in here with me. The only other person that knows what I know has a gun to my head. It's also too bad that he doesn't have enough fucking common sense to know he knows what I know. He can save the world...but first, he has to kill me.
