CHAPTER TWO: PART FIFTEEN

SPOILERS

Vertin walked outside of Ms. Sotheby's manor after noting down everyone's wishes before the 'storm' and Schneider was kneeling on the ground murmuring something.

"... I didn't know you prayed," Vertin said as she approached Schneider.

Schneider stayed quiet for a moment.

"You're the last one to tell me your wish," Vetin said solemnly. "Although you won't go, I still want to know," Vertin said, relieved slightly at the fact that Schneider was an arcanist.

Schneider didn't answer.

In Schneider's silence, Vertin began to think. "All of the friends I made back then all went away when the 'storm' came. But me and Schneider will be different. Maybe... Just maybe... We'll end up more than just friends." Vertin could feel her cheeks redden as she thought this and quickly waved the thought away as Schneider began to speak.

"Do you want to hear my wish, my lord?" Schneider asked as she looked up to Vertin.

Vertin nodded, curious to hear what she would say. Vertin thought of the possibilities. "Perhaps a special request for dinner? Or maybe a kiss- No, no! Don't think like that Vertin!"

Schneider spoke with a solemn tone, "Then my wish is... don't forget me."

Vertin wasn't sure what she meant by this. "Well... Okay. I got it." Vertin scribbled down Schneider's wish.

"Then, shall we head inside?" Vertin asked Schneider and subconsciously offered her a hand.

Schneider smiled and took Vertin's hand, dusting off her red, feathered dress.

The two walked about halfway back until Vertin noticed that Schneider hadn't let go of her hand.

"Oh, my apologies, Ms. Schneider," Vertin said as she attempted to let go of Schneider's hand.

Schneider didn't let go of her hand, instead, she held it tighter.

"Do you not wish to hold my hand, my lord?" Schneider asked with a tilt of her head.

"I didn't mean that," Vertin paused. "I didn't want you to be uncomfortable with holding my hand."

Schneider chuckled, "Ho, ho, of course not, my lord."

Vertin nodded and they walked the rest of the way back in silence.

By the time they arrived at the suitcase, the table was set, everyone had already sat down, and it had started to 'rain' again. No one mentioned the fact that all of the buildings outside of the suitcase started to melt away. Luckily, Sotheby's concoction had managed to turn everyone's appetite back to normal, and they no longer saw money and valuables as food.

They had a long table with a white tablecloth draped over it. Everyone sat around it while munching on all of the food Ms. Sotheby had cooked.

"Ahh... I'm so exhausted! How tiring is it to cook!" Sotheby had exclaimed with a sigh. "Finally we delivered the meals to all of the refugees, but our soup became cold!" Sotheby whined.

X had mentioned the concoction Sotheby had created to turn all of their appetites back to normal. He enjoyed his food.

Druvis III also gave her input on the amazing quality of Sotheby's cooking.

Some of the refugees also shared their thanks to Sotheby.

Vertin stared at her empty plate, fearing the worst. The 'storm' was going to happen any second.

Vertin began to think of something to ease her weary mind. "At least I will have Schneider with me for the next years to come." Vertin turned to look at Schneider, who was also looking at her.

Schneider grinned at Vertin. "Did you wish to see my face, my lord? Perhaps it was a coincidence that I also wished to see yours once more."

Vertin could feel her heart beating faster upon seeing Schneider's smile.

"Argh!" One of the refugees shouted, and everyone looked towards him.

"What happened? What's wrong?" Sotheby asked.

"It tastes horrible..." The refugee said.

Everyone laughed at his comment.

"You have to believe what you see, sir!" Sotheby said with a grin. "If you don't believe it, even the hallucinogen won't help!" Sotheby said, mentioning her concoction. "Don't be fooled by the 'storm'. What I prepared for you is definitely the best food in the world!"

Vertin looked again back to Schneider and her sister, the two speaking together fondly.

Mr. Karson and Sotheby began to speak together.

Even though misfortune lay not too far away, everyone celebrated at this moment. Perhaps that knowing that this would be their last, made them want to cherish it all the more.
