They come to him first, as they always do.
Humans. Fools. Prey.
They search for him in the darkest corners of the world, even as their instincts scream at them to flee.
Some come and go. Many stay, and rot.
The first person Dallas turns, though, is a man who leads a hoard through the darkness just to kill him. A young man with wet blue eyes and a voice so soft that it tapers off when his throat is pierced by teeth. His fate should've been sealed then — Dallas should've fed from him and left him to rot like the many, many fools that have come before him.
Except this man is no fool. Dallas would be blind to not see that — after all, he is the first human who has managed to track him down without him having to pull any strings. That has to count for something, and even if it doesn't, he has lived too long to pay any mind to anything outside of his own desires. Centuries of solitude have worn away at his impulse control little by little, and today is the day he breaks.
And so, selfishly, he pulls away once he's sure that his venom is bound to burn its way through the human's system. The man lets out a soft, confused noise from his ruined throat and for a second, Dallas feels something that might be pity. In a gesture of uncharacteristic mercy, he helps the man sit up, moving his malleable body so that his back is propped up against a wall.
They stare at each other for a moment after that — uncertain blue meeting blood red through the dim light. Distantly, Dallas wonders what the man will look like once the venom sets in, once he's drowning in flames of burning agony.
"... What are you going to do to me?" The man breaks the silence suddenly with a murmur, fear and disconcertion reflected in his clear blue eyes.
Dallas offers no answer — because there's nothing else for him to do. This human's fate is sealed, and soon he will walk down one of the loneliest, most unbearable paths unknown by man.
So Dallas leaves for that path first, as he always does.
