( i. from the beginning of life, it was always kai and spencer. they were born as strangers, but raised as best friends. between birthday parties and family holidays, they did absolutely everything together. it was their normal. nobody ever found kai without her straight-faced brunette, and nobody ever found spencer without her smiling blonde. they were just kids; it was such an innocent friendship.

(ii. as they grew older, they started to find their own personalities. spencer hastings became serious, putting an immense amount of pressure upon herself to be the best at everything she did. her body was a pool of stress by the time she was just fourteen. she started high school, whilst planning out what she'd be doing with her life at fifty. she joined debate and science club and all things brains. her gp was the highest it could get and her reputation was immaculate.

(iii. meanwhile, kai winters found her love for sport — soccer, specifically. she was laid-back and smooth, and everything she did was simply because she wanted to. she didn't care about the future, as she enjoyed the present. she lived by the motto to go with the flow, and she hadn't encountered anxiety at any point of her life. she was a calming presence; a positive soul to be around. until she was out on the field, and then she was a force to be reckoned with.

(iv. despite their changes, spencer and kai's friendship stayed the same. starting high school, they met some other girls — they met the girl. the one that ruined everything. alison dilaurentis was cruel and cunning, a bully at its best, but yet every single person she met would've done anything for her. spencer and kai included.

( v. the year they befriended alison and the others was the most beautifully chaotic year of their lives. looking back, it felt like a fever dream. not one day was different. alison treated her friends like dolls, but they each craved every bit attention she gave them. she knew everything about them; every single secret they were desperate to bury. but nobody knew a single thing about her.

( vi. when alison disappeared, the entire friendship group fell apart, spencer and kai included. they each started a new life, and became too busy to see each other anymore. kai focused on her soccer and all the parties she was invited to, while spencer could always be found locked up in a library at atrocious times. the only times they ever interacted was when they went past each other at school, mumbling an awkward "hi". so many years of friendship, only to become strangers.

( vi. one year after alison's disappearance, kai was a completely different person. she'd truly found herself now, and she was genuinely happy with her life. but her entire world comes crashing down in a single night, with one single text. and then she finds herself back at spencer's doorstep. and things between the two girls are so much different now, both harbouring dark secrets.
