THE AIR TASTED FRESH AT this time of the night

THE AIR TASTED FRESH AT this time of the night. Summer was closing in on them, and Fall started to creep up. It was dark inside the shed, their only source of light being the moon outside and the twinkle lights set up around them. Their only source of warmth came from the blankets they'd tossed on themselves and the thin pyjamas they wore. But it was cozy, in the strangest way.

Kai Winters tossed her head back with a laugh. Her choice of pyjamas was a pair of knee-length, grey basketball shorts, paired with an old soccer jersey. Her blonde her was tied up into a long ponytail and her blue eyes danced in excitement as she conversed with her friends about the beginning of sophomore year.

Thunder crashed above them, but the girls all chose to ignore it for a moment, too busy laughing and sharing stories. It was just the five of them for a moment — Kai Winters, Emily Fields, Aria Montgomery, Hanna Marin and Spencer Hastings. The five dolls, whose owner hadn't yet arrived.

Then, all of the electricity went off, leaving them alone in the darkness. Aria Montgomery, the shy girl with pink streaks in her hair, grabbed a flashlight in panic.

"It must be the storm," Spencer dismissed. She was the smartest of them, and she was also Kai's best friend.

Their group had been put together by Alison DiLaurentis, who ran their high school with her coy smirk and her caramel curls. She was far from introverted, like all her friends were, but she chose them. She carefully picked out each girl and added them to her dream group.

However, Spencer and Kai had already known each other. They'd been best friends for years. Everybody knew that.

Nodding, Kai agreed with her statement, as did Emily and Hanna. She leaned forward to grab a matchstick, while Spencer took out a candle. Meanwhile, Aria seemed to be anxious, still clutching her flashlight.

Something creaked outside.

"There's something out there," whispered Aria.

This time, everyone agreed with her.

"Guys," Hanna Marin, commonly known as the cruel name she was given 'Hefty Hanna', jumped up in alarm.

The rest of the girls followed her, slowly walking towards the noise. Kai's eyes were wide with fear, as she glanced at Spencer to her side. Spencer didn't seem scared; she never did. That girl was fearless.

Something smashed outside the shed, making the girls squeal. Kai clenched her jaw, trying to wipe the fear from her face and breathe normally. Spencer watched her from the side, and made the move to link their arms. The blonde sent her a small smile. She loved being her best friend.

Huddled together, the five girls continued walking towards the door, panic evident in every step they took. They weren't sure what they'd find at the other side, and they didn't know if they really wanted to.

"Gotcha!"

All the girls jumped back with a scream, startled by the sudden arrival.

Alison DiLaurentis strolled into the shed with a large smirk, having tricked her friends. They'd tried telling her that they didn't find what she did amusing, but that only made her laugh. "I thought it was hilarious, girls," she said with a grin, sitting herself down on one of the seats in the middle of the shed.
