a/n: based on 'treacherous' by taylor swift, one of my fav songs of all time <3
"Can't fall asleep?", you ask Natasha when the redhead joins you in the kitchen. It's long after midnight already, and both of you should be asleep by now. You give her a soft smile as you pour her a glass of water, sliding it over the countertop. She stops it with her hand, returning your smile.
"No." Natasha sits down at the kitchen island, slowly sipping on the water as she watches you. You join her and reach over to draw a tiny heart on the glass in her hands, which has condensation on it because of the ice cold water inside. She glances at you, her eyes watching you carefully as a smirk tugs at the corners of her mouth. "You?"
"Me neither. I was stupid and drank coffee at, like, 9pm", you sigh. "My own fault."
"Yes", she agrees. "Not your smartest decision."
You lightly nudge her with your elbow, making her laugh quietly. The butterflies in your stomach go wild when you hear that sound. It might be your favorite thing in the world.
The two of you keep sitting there in silence for a while, sipping water and staring out the window. It's a comfortable silence, one that doesn't make you worry about what to say next. But after a while, it still gets old.
"I have an idea", you say. "That is, if you're still not tired."
"I'm not. Shoot."
"Let's drive around", you say, locking your eyes with hers. Natasha's eyebrows rise ever so slightly.
"That's your idea?", she smirks, clearly amused but trying to hide it.
"Yes." You pout a little. "Don't be mean about it."
"I'm not", she quickly interferes. "I just...I don't know, I expected you to say something else."
Before you can ask what exactly she expected, Natasha's already up on her feet and takes your hand to pull you with her. You hurry out of the building as quietly as possible, knowing that everyone else is probably asleep, and go straight to the garage.
You unlock your car and you both get inside as a light switches on inside the compound — it's coming from Clint's room. Knowing he's a light sleeper, he probably woke up because you opened the garage door. It's not exactly a loud noise, but it's not completely silent either.
Natasha grins at you after she noticed the light in his room. "Someone will be angry tomorrow."
You giggle as you start the car, letting the engine roar. "Even angrier now."
Natasha's smile widens and she laughs as you drive the car out of the garage, out onto the street. You leave the Avengers tower behind as you tap your fingers against the steering wheel, a giddy sensation spreading in your stomach.
"Where do you want to go?", you then ask her, glancing at her and smiling.
"Somewhere quiet. Peaceful." She looks at you.
"Got anything specific in mind?", you follow up as you take a left turn.
"No. Just...anywhere."
You nod and place your hand on Natasha's thigh, feeling hers end up on top of yours as she interlaces your fingers. The warmth of her palm is electrifying, making your heart beat faster.
The two of you have been 'dating' for almost two months now, if you can even call it that. Nothing's official, you don't have a label — but you love spending time with each other, no matter how. But, to be honest, you haven't even kissed yet. Seriously. Neither of you has had the courage to take that first step yet, so you're both just waiting for the other one to do it.
You yearn for that first kiss to happen. There's nothing you want more, and you believe Natasha feels the same. The way she looks at your lips, her face inching closer as she whispers something to you, sending shivers up your spine. Blushing cheeks and shy smiles, exchanged looks and cupped faces fill your nights just like Natasha fills your bed; it's magical and pure and indescribable. Nobody but you understands.
And now, her name echoes through your mind all the time. Whether you're alone, on a mission or holding her while you're watching a movie together — it never leaves you.
You keep driving in sweet silence, holding hands and looking at the dark road ahead. Two headlights light up the way, the only source of light now that you've left the busy city and are heading towards a place you remember from your childhood.
You haven't had many sleepless nights before, but, so far, this one is your favorite. There's a weird sense of peace in being alone in your car, driving around as nobody says a word. It feels intimate and precious, like something you want to keep between you and the person you're driving with.
"We're there", you say softly, reluctantly letting go of her hand. Natasha looks outside, seeing that you're on a slope that overlooks the city. Her face lights up and she smiles as she turns around to look at you. "I didn't disappoint, did I?", you smile.
"No, you certainly didn't", she says quietly, her eyes meeting yours. Tension emerges between the two of you, and you swallow as you glance at her lips. "You should drink coffee in the evening more often."
"What? Just so I can bring you to random places?", you smile, tilting your head.
"Yes, exactly." Natasha opens the passenger door and gets out of the car. "Come on."
Your smile quickly shifts into a frown. "Now? At night?"
"Yes, at night." She raises her eyebrows. "You aren't scared, are you?"
"No", you mumble. "How safe is it, though...?"
"Safe enough. I've got my gun with me, don't worry." Natasha looks at you expectantly, and you cave and get out of the car as well. She smiles happily as she walks around the car, takes your hand and pulls you over towards the cliff. You stop at a safe distance, since she knows you have a slight fear of heights — or, rather, of falling —; then she gets in front of you, hesitantly putting her arms around your waist. You draw her closer, your arms wrapped around her.
"Why'd you bring your gun?", you ask quietly, smiling with your eyebrows raised.
"Safety first", she replies smugly. "You can never know who you'll run into. What if someone tries to attack you and I need to save your ass?"
You laugh silently. "Okay, fair enough."
"Don't doubt me", she smiles, her eyes glued to yours. Your cheeks flush when you notice, and a warm feeling coats your face. Natasha brings her hands up to your face, her fingers lightly brushing over your cheeks. Her finger pads tap against your jaw and her thumbs caress your cheeks, making you smile.
"I don't", you reply gently, your breath hitching in your throat when her face suddenly gets closer to yours. Only inches are separating your lips from hers, and you can feel her breath fan over your mouth. She tilts her head ever so slightly, the corners of her lips curling into a tiny smile. "What are you doing?", you ask softly, running your hands over her back.
"Shut up, I need to test something", she whispers, her lips brushing over yours and causing a firework in your body. You gasp quietly when she finally kisses you, her lips firm and determined to stay on yours. You reciprocate the kiss after a quick moment of surprise, sighing contently when she cups your face. You feel the chills all over yourself, desperately hoping that this moment will never end.
But then, it does. Natasha slowly pulls away, her cheeks pink and her eyes shimmering. You can't help but smile as you lean in to press your forehead against hers. "And?", you ask gently as she closes her eyes.
"Test successful", she breathes, tilting her head and kissing you again.
