a/n: back to my roots with this one! songfic based on taylor's 'gold rush' but from nat's perspective; you're wanda's new comfort person and nat has abandonment issues (i don't know how else to describe this lol)
vaguely inspired by the song in the sense that i had this idea while listening to it
planned to publish this on Thursday but i couldn't wait any longer so here you go
Natasha is used to people leaving her.
At this point, she almost expects it. It's like a shadow lurking in her mind, small and silent but lethal. It reminds her of everything that's happened so far.
Her mother, abandoning her when she was an infant. She never got the chance to meet her, yet she thinks about her every day.
Small things bring back a loss she never experienced — Laura, cradling her baby. Mothers pushing strollers in parks. The soft hum of lullabies, swimming just underneath the surface of her consciousness but never coming up for air.
Sometimes, she wonders what it would've been like to be held, to be wanted, but the thought twists in her chest until it becomes something darker, something she needs to push back down before it eats her alive.
Then there's her constructed family in Ohio, shattered when they were separated.
Being depraved of one family was devastating. Being depraved of two was annihilating.
Yelena, Melina, Alexei — they taught her what family could feel like, even if it was a lie. Losing them made her realize that, sometimes, a lie is better than nothing.
You were the first person to make her believe otherwise.
Lastly, her colleagues at SHIELD — rarely loyal and almost never trustworthy.
Allies turned into enemies quickly. Trust was a resource that was spent too recklessly and earned too late.
The Avengers feel like the first real family she's ever had. She tries to keep that fragile fantasy alive by ignoring the destructive voices in her head. They appear at night, whispering to her. You'll lose them as well. This won't last. In response, she either curls into you or gets out of bed.
Over time, she's gotten better at silencing the words that make her afraid.
Sometimes, however, she can't help it. Her past makes her prone to doubting the ones around her, no matter how pure their intentions. The betrayals, the lies, the promises unkept, all shaping her into who she is now.
Natasha is someone who doubts the people around her. So far, it's happened to everyone — Steve, Tony, even Clint.
Everyone except you.
But sometimes, not even you are the exception.
You always return, without fail, but Natasha still prepares herself for the day you don't. It's instinct, carved deep into her bones. She'll always look for the signs that tell her she's about to lose you, too.
A phone call that doesn't come. A hesitance in your words.
Your affection directed somewhere else.
When Wanda loses Pietro, she loses the one anchor she had left. Her entire world, ripped from her life and torn apart in front of her. Her twin, her other half — gone in an instant.
Her grief is raw and overwhelming. She falls to her knees, her fingers curling and her mouth opening into a scream. Cries of sorrow and fury, echoing the loss she hasn't fully grasped yet. Her powers have always reflected her emotions. They seem to burst around her.
