First Day of Grade 8

Emma isn't normal.

She likes to think she is, but 'normal' isn't moving from one place to another every few years.

'Normal' isn't being what society calls 'Gifted'.

'Normal' isn't being insecure about EVERYTHING.

Emma wished she could be like those people on reality T.V. You know, the ones with the perfect hair and eyes and parents and love life. The ones with no acne or flaws. The ones who's friend groups are always perfect. The ones who always have a uniqueness,  a popularity that never ruins their image. In short, the ones who are what she wants to be.

She shouldered her backpack and left the car, waving goodbye to her parents. She led her brother to his classroom. Last summer, one of her best friends, Athena, left the school. He was moving to a different place, and she missed him. She was also constantly worried about him because she knew he had some lingering mental health problems. She had always helped him when he needed it, and over the summer stayed in touch. At this point, you could even call her his personal therapist, free of charge.

"Hey, Emma!" She walked to the speaker. Mandy was a tomboy-ish girl. She always wore black, as though she was emo, and had a whole lot of acne on her face. She talked in a way that would get under Emma's nerves, but Emma was too nice to 'unfriend' her. Mandy was, pardon me for the language, pretty darn stupid for a gifted kid. She would never do her work but somehow always finished her tests. She and Emma talked for a while until Emma was rudely pushed.

"Emma! Hey! How was your summer?" Leo, the class clown, and one of Emma's best guy friends, started conversation with her. He was an elfish, short kid (Yeah, like the Leo, the latino in the Percy Jackson series) and had the smile of a kid who the teachers would immediately label as a troublemaker. He and his friends, Seth and Oliver, were the part of their friend group as Athena labeled it, "The six musketeers".  The six musketeers had the following people: Mandy, Oliver, Seth, Leo, Kieran and Emma. Athena had left the six because of his moving issue.

"Emma," Said Oliver in his still-maturing cracky voice. He continued to tell a joke and Emma laughed. Oliver was a bit taller than Leo, and he was really like a punching bag. Emma would, as a joke, take his hat and lightly tap his head with it. She did this with all the boys, just for her entertainment. Emma did never actually hurt them, they were more like a playful banter.  Seth was a more down- to-earth kind of guy, but he could be just as dumb as Oliver and Leo. Kieran was a chef. He made the best food, but, like all the other guys, was pretty stupid when he wanted to be. Kieran was the tallest of the friend group, towering over them at 6 ft. Mandy and Emma were the same height, near 5'4 and the other guys were near that.

Their homeroom teacher, Ms. Ali, was a science-y, logical, down to earth kind of woman. If you've ever watched Masterchef India, I'd compare her to Chef Garima. Emma loved Ms. Ali immediately. She started off the school year by answering every question possible, helping Ms. Ali all the time and trying to do all the extra circulars.

There were 22 people in Ms. Ali's Grade 8 gifted class. I'll break them down for you, in order of friend group.

THE JOCKS

Alex: Gamer, sporty, science and math whiz.

Nathan: Emma's crush, Sporty, gamer, and VERY CUTE if Emma says so herself.

Carl: Gamer, sporty, and.... pretty dumb.

Lyal: Last year, he was a immature guy who still watched pinkfong and gave out presents to everyone. This year, he's kind of invisible. Not sporty, not a gamer nor very smart at any subjects.

Seb: A geo/his whiz and innocent (Kind of?). Emma gets along okay with him, but would prefer hanging with LYAL and that says something.

Eric: A tiny, very gross (no elaboration) and techy kid.

THE 'POPULAR' GIRLS (VERY GOOD FRIENDS WITH THE JOCKS)

Nancy: A frenemy of Emma, she 'heads' the popular girls. Emma used to be in their friend group ever since she spilled about her crush to Catherine. After a while, Nancy kicked her out of the friend group saying Emma was too violent and mean, and acted behind Nancy's back a lot, shipping her with a guy she didn't like. This happened in March, and their friendship lasted since January. Ever since then, Nancy's been cold towards Emma, even though her friends moved on and are friendly to her. Smart, popular, excels in most subjects, trend-setter and grudge-holder.

Olivia: Nancy's best friend. She isn't as smart as Nancy but is very sporty.

Catherine: A nice girl who talks to everyone in class. She's tall, 5'11 and also loves basketball (One of the many things that she can connect with to Emma.) She's also smart.

Mary: A Swiftie (Usually the one thing that she and Emma can connect with) and also very accident prone.

THE WEIRDOS

Vincent: That one crazy boy with the nasal voice who goes around telling jokes and proposes to random people with chromebook-rings.

Thomas: That one dirty kid... no elaboration

Timothy: That kid who makes you feel like you should run away fast because he wears black with a scary expression and gives you stalker vibes

Grace: That pick-me but not?  SUPPPERRRRRR atheletic and cool with most people.

Aiden: A tiny, dwarf kinda kid who makes weird jokes.

EMMA'S FRIEND GROUP

Emma: An average height girl who loves coffee, to read, and other slay girly things. She has skin the colour of hot chocolate and natural, shoulder-blade length black hair with light brown highlights (that aren't very noticeable) She has brown eyes that are slightly kaleidoscopic, changing form light to dark brown. She doesn't look like a model, but her body type is slim.

Oliver: The voice cracky kid who loves gaming.

Leo: The nice kid who likes to be, as described by Seth and Oliver, "Chaotic polite."

Seth: The idiot who is like a brother to Emma. Pretty short, but he's Emma's height.

Kieran: A chef-like guy who (Emma suspects) has a crush on her. Kind of cute.

Mandy: A pretty stupid girl with a lisping issue. Never finishes work on time, only completes tests. She likes to think that she's scary, and she kind of is (in a crazy way).
