They called it The Threshold because it divided the two realms apart: the realm of the living and the realm of the dead (those who were either recently deceased or those with unfinished business.) Those in the realm of the dead were all in a limbo state: trapped with nowhere to go. The realm of the dead was not the afterlife, it was simply a space in between spaces. There was an afterlife and they could all get to it if they finished what they had been stuck in there for.

There was a mode of transportation called the "Limbo Traveller's Express" or the "LTE." It was a train that took the spirits (referred to as limbo travellers) to and fro through their realm and through The Threshold into the realm of the living. Some limbo travellers preferred to haunt the living while others did not. Limbo travellers appeared as shadows and silhouettes; even in their limbo state.

It is often believed that ghosts and spirits (limbo travellers) are angry and in pain when in reality that isn't entirely the case. There are a large handful of limbo travellers who are angry and in pain but they don't make up the majority. Most tend to keep to themselves and keep quiet, continuing on their path in limbo seeking completion.

However, that isn't to say none of them have a sad emotion or an angry emotion: a lot of them do. It really doesn't help when The Threshold has an immense psychological pressure on those who live within it. The best thing to do when it comes to living in The Threshold is to simply keep to one's self and be calm and collected.

Some of the limbo travellers were religious in their life and once they died they weren't necessarily disappointed but they weren't right. The afterlife wasn't in the religious understanding, the afterlife was simply the resting place where energy was stored after entropy. Some limbo travellers believed in reincarnation and for the most part, the act wasn't wrong but not every energy stored was put into another lifesource, only some. It was all an act of randomality.

There was no higher power in the breathing conscious sense of the term. All the energy stored together created a super hybrid collective, however, all lifesources would have to atrophy before the conglomeration could be brought into fruition. This amalgamation wouldn't necessarily become a God but rather a collection of energy stored to bring forth a new creation; whether that be a galaxy, a planet, or simply a new species.

But for the time being, this would not be a possibility in The Threshold. For this would mean no more life. This idea was referred to as The Eternal Death. The Eternal Death was a concept that most limbo travellers feared for it was the act of erasing The Threshold and everything within it and completely starting anew. A permanent non existence.

There were other places in The Threshold. The Threshold was seen as a sort of metropolis where all energy existed, waiting to be stored in the afterlife. There were buildings, forests, roads, strange contraptions, and houses. The limbo travellers had freedom to go about any of these places, using the LTE.

For the most part, things were quite peaceful. There wasn't any peril that went on, as far as the limbo travellers knew. To sum it up, things were alright. Everything went smoothly and freely; balanced, as all things should be.

But the story I am going to tell you does not begin in The Threshold. No, it begins in the realm of the living. It is there that we meet our main character who goes by the name of Christopher Cadence who, in a few days, is going to die.
