If the world ends...

"If the world ends, it'll be because of a worldwide famine. We'd run out of food because global warming would continuously start to wear down on our crop output and pollution would poison our atmosphere, causing the crops and animals to die and everyone would starve." August reasons softly, her blue eyes sparkling with intelligence. She raises her eyebrow, daring her friend to do better. Evien doesn't give their friend any mind.

"If the world ends, it's going to be from those monsters." Evien retorts with a smirk. "Everyone knows it."

It has only been a month since the first discovery of those beasts, and already thousands have died from both the monsters and the disease they brought with them.

"Evien, come on. We all know that's probably going to be the case unless the government, I don't know, puts them all in some Jurassic Park kind of zoo or something. The point of this game is to think of other situations that aren't the actual, realistic ones, but still realistic enough to make sense." August explains to Evien, feeling exasperated with her friend's actions.

August and Evien have been playing this game since they were small, and their parents and siblings always thought it was odd for them to always be contemplating the worst scenarios humankind could face. Such a peculiar hobby for two fifteen-year-olds, let alone eight-year-olds. And that's when they made up this game, when they were eight. Both of the friends, August and Evien, can remember it.

Now, their parents both never exactly liked it, but they let their children play in hopes that they might one day outgrow such a negative game. They never did, instead still playing it six years later.

"I know, I know. Au-Ree, I was just trying to make a point. We're all probably going to perish from this and I know that we all know that." Evien says back. August smiles, as she loves when Evien uses that nickname for her. She thinks of when they were smaller and Evien had a lisp, and they couldn't say August properly, so they combined August's middle name, Revel with it, creating Au-Ree. August's parents are very bohemian-hippie, and even more so for naming their daughter August Revel. Her older brother has a similar name to match his smile and the beautiful voice the siblings shared, Oceane Lyric. Evien knew that both of the names matched the siblings perfectly though. August and her warm, dark skin, long bleached blonde hair that curls tightly and swims around her head like an ethereal crown of her own making. Oceane looks more like his dad, and his cooler but even darker skin, his blue eyes sparking a deeper tone than August's and glistening like the Atlantic.

Speaking of Oceane, he just now walks into his sister's room to bring the two friends down for dinner.

"Hey, you two, dinner is ready." Oceane addresses the room with another of his pretty smiles. The entire family has that look, the one where you know that they all have a gift of beauty and magic in their voices like ancient gods that poet would write songs about. Evien felt magical just being around them.

Evien loves August's family, and they love them, so they have no hesitation to race the two siblings down the stairs to get the best spots at the table. They're so close to the family that you could just guess they're adopted in.

They are always with the Reyes family. It's better than being at home with their overworked dad whose stress makes them unconformable. They worry that the government is going to put everyone on lockdown-further lockdown-for a while. Evien watched the news. They know it could happen.

And if they're all on lockdown then Evien can't be with August. They're with their best friend almost every day...

Evien needs August to be with them every day. They won't even dare even think too long about the reason to themself, because that reason could ruin their friendship. But how Evien wants to tell August, "I love you so much Au-Ree, I've loved you for the past year since I slept over at your house and we stayed up until five A.M. and I realized how much I like girls specifically you and I hope you love me back and this has been tearing me up inside please don't hate me don't hate me don't hate me-"

They're going to have to tell her soon.

One day.

Before the world ends.

They wish that the monsters won't ruin this for them.
