Chapter five – Not running away
That was three years ago, and although we’ve had our rough patches, mother trying to sue us, the press saying that we were on drugs and a million other different speculations and rumours, today we are making it official. I’m getting married!
He proposed on the same spot that we first kissed, and the ring was from a small antique shop that we’d walked pas only minutes before.
In the end I was glad that we had never told the paparazzi where dad lived because it bought us almost a months time before mother figured it out and appeared halfway through lunch one day, screaming with rage and saying a million horrible things that no-one should ever had to hear. I didn’t care though, even when she was screaming and cursing at me, her face contorted in rage. Because Joe was standing right behind me, with one arm wrapped around my waist, and a video camera in the other hand.
And that’s one of the reasons why my mother is in prison at the moment, along with countless other crimes that came to light, drink driving, fraud, bribery and even theft which you would think she didn’t really need to do with the amount of money she was earning off me, for doing absolutely nothing.
So today is the big day, and the nerves I felt before concerts are nothing compared to the butterflies in my stomach as I hear the wedding march begin to play. My dad squeezes my hand reassuringly and I begin walking up the aisle.
I reach Joe and he smiles at me lopsidedly, his face full of happiness and my nerves disappear. The vows fly past, I’m so absorbed in his eyes that he has to nudge me when it’s my turn to say ‘I do’ and the whole congregation laughs as I blush and repeat the traditional lines.
And as the vicar says ‘you may kiss the bride’ I realize that now I really do have the perfect life. A father that loves me, friends who really care about me and best of all, the most wonderful husband and best friend I could ever have.
And I wouldn’t swap that for the world.
