                                           Prologue

''It is not over until the mockingjay sings''-Lucy Gray Baird

T he day was bright and shining; the trees, leaves, and grasses were all dancing to a melody. This time, it was not the wind's melody but a different one. The birds were quiet and attentive, listening to the Dulcet Voice singing.

Are you, are you comin' to the tree?
Where they strung up a man, they say, who murdered three
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you comin' to the tree
Where the dead man called out for his love to flee?
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree

A young girl, sitting on the roots of a tree, sang softly and beautifully.

Are you, are you comin' to the tree
Where I told you to run, so we'd both be free?
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you comin' to the tree
Where the necklace of hope, side by side with me?
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree
Are you, are you comin' to the tree
Where I told you to run, so we'd both be free?
Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be
If we met at midnight in the hanging tree

But the sweet melody was interrupted by a rough and deep voice that belonged to a
man who seemed to be in his middle twenties.

"I've warned you not to sing these songs again, young lady."

"But father, this was mother's favorite," said the tiny girl's voice in a mellow tone. Upset that her father refuses to let her sing the songs that her mother loved.

"Well, she's dead now, and hurry because someone can see us. We have to go now." said the girl's father, grabbing the girl's wrist and dragging her with him. Never to be seen again until years later.
