Beelzebub

I didn't want to take Asmodeus back to his realm. It was where he'd gotten snatched from, which meant it was easily accessible to Leviathan. I also predicted Leviathan would be lurking, waiting for Asmodeus to go back home. It would only be a matter of time before he made his presence known to one of us.

I feared if that happened, we might not be able to get Asmodeus away safely. I didn't even want to risk this, but Death thought it might be good for him.

Don't worry so much, Lucifer quietly told me as he grabbed my hand in mine. Trust that Death knows what he's doing. He wouldn't do anything to risk Asmodeus. You know that.

I sighed. I did know that, but that wouldn't stop me from worrying. I hadn't seen what Asmodeus looked like when Death rescued him, but I knew the trauma had been horrible—bad enough that he had called for Death, begging for the reaper to take his soul.

An immortal being—one specifically created to feel nothing—was suddenly feeling everything after being so fucking tortured. I didn't know what game the creator was playing at, but I didn't like seeing them using Asmodeus like a toy.

I was the ruler of Hell, but before this shit with Leviathan happened, the prince of demons was the most powerful and the strongest being in Hell.

Cassian, Asmodeus's second in command, was waiting at the entrance of Asmodeus's realm. The moment we crossed over, silence fell over Hell. All of the demons suddenly went quiet, as if they could sense that their prince was back home.

"Prince," Cassian breathed. Then, he enveloped our man in his arms. They hugged tightly, friends that had been together since the moment they were created. "We've been worried sick. How long have you been rescued?"

"A few days," Death answered for him. "He needed time to recover."

"Understandable," Cassian murmured, running his eyes over Death before looking at me and Lucifer. "I see you... made friends?"

Asmodeus snorted. "Something like that. It's difficult to explain." He looked at us. "I need to sort some things."

"We'll follow," I told him. "It's not that I don't trust your demons to protect you, Asmodeus, but you were snatched from here once. We won't run that chance again. Leviathan will be lurking, waiting for you to come back."

Asmodeus's face paled the slightest bit. Nodding once, he turned and pressed his hand to Cassian's lower back, beginning to explain to Cassian in a low voice what happened. I could feel his pain through our link, but then it disappeared right as Death's reaper pushed forward, his wings ripping through Death's back.

"You're worrying too much," Lucifer told me as we followed Asmodeus and Cassian over a stone bridge that was warm beneath my feet. A river of lava flowed beneath it, and I could see some demons lounging in it.

"I don't think we're worrying enough," Death said, falling into step next to us. "Leviathan is close. I can feel him. I just can't sense him enough to know how close he is."

I clenched my jaw. "Fucking great," I muttered. Asmodeus pushed open the heavy steel doors to his dark castle before stepping inside. We followed him to his study, taking up leaning positions against the wall as Asmodeus and Cassian began working through whatever needed Asmodeus's attention.

"Do you think we can get him out of here safely if it comes to that?" I asked Death.

Death nodded. "We will get him to safety by any means necessary."

My mind tingled, and I growled, Leviathan's presence suddenly making itself known to me. Sure as hell took him long enough considering we'd been in Asmodeus's realm for hours now, and Death had sensed his presence when we first got here.

"He's close," I said, standing up from the chair I'd slouched in about three hours ago.

"Fuck," Death snarled, pushing off the wall. He'd been as immobile as a statue since we got here, so it was a bit jarring to see him suddenly peel himself away from the wallpaper.

"I'll guard the entrance," Lucifer told me before disappearing.

Be safe, I told him. I will destroy all of Hell if you are taken from me.

I'm always safe, baby.

"Asmodeus," Death called. The prince looked up at him, his pen pausing. "We need to go."

Asmodeus frowned. "But I—"

"He is here, baby," Death said gently, even as his ice cold eyes suddenly lit up with a blue glow.

"I can come with—"

"No," Asmodeus instantly told Cassian as he stood to his feet. When Asmodeus reached Death, Death wrapped his wings around him, shielding him. "Please stay here and keep my people in line. I'll be back as soon as possible. I promise."

"We won't keep him away," I assured Cassian. "We're just...trying to protect him."

He nodded. "I know. And I am forever in your debt for doing so."

I shook my head. "He is ours."

Cassian's eyes lit with surprise before he nodded, understanding dawning on his features. With that, Death looked at me. "I will meet you in my realm."

I nodded. "Keep him safe."

Death smirked. "I'd like to see that fucker come for us."

With that, Death and Asmodeus were gone. I went in search of Lucifer and found him on the other side of the bridge, partially shifted into his Hell form. Leviathan was slowly making his way closer, growing bigger by the second, ready for a fight.

It wasn't one he would get today.

I rested my hand on Lucifer's back once I reached him. "Let's go."

He nodded once and turned to face me, wrapping me in his wings. And just like that, we were gone as well.

And just like that, we were gone as well
