Episode 13
Beth POV
Monday comes around quickly, yet the day moves slowly. Class was out for the day, and I had at least two hours before I had to report to the diner. I sighed as I turned a fresh page in my note books to practice a series of mathematical equations. Zack, on the other hand, was doing everything but studying; he was practically chatting my ears off.
"Did you get all of your textbooks?"
I shook my head; I have the money to buy them, but I'm not going to do it just now. I didn't want to make the same mistake I did last year by purchasing books I didn't need or utilize. Now I have an almost fresh book with only two mathematical equations done and the rest blank. I couldn't sell it since everyone wanted a non-touchable book.
"I was thinking of waiting till the end of the semester. I'll merely photocopy it if I can find the identical books in the municipal library or here." Purchasing a text book worth $2,000 did not set well with me.
I could have used that same money to pay off my parents' debt. Speaking of which, the next time I see them, I'll take some of the paperwork and pay it off online.
"That's rather clever."
I shook my head. I began doing my arithmetic, when my phone beeped with a text notification in the middle of the calculation. A few furious eyes were directed my way, and I murmured an apology and turned the notification off my phone. I slid the phone behind the desk and discovered a message from Damon.
Damon: Good day, Ms. Virgin.
I rolled my eyes, thinking we'd gotten away with that name.
Me: Yes?
She saw the message but did not respond immediately away.
Damon: I have an occasion tomorrow and would want you to accompany me. Don't worry about the outfit; I have purchased it.
"Do you intend to place a fresh McDonald's order tomorrow?" Zack inquired, and I leaped. I had completely forgotten he was seated right next to me. I gasped when I realized it was McDonald's Tuesday the next day.
Oh my God!
I returned my gaze to the message.
Damon: I'll pick you up after your shift at the restaurant, and I'd want to spend the night with you.
I bite my lower lip, knowing what staying the night entails. I figured I could do the event and then return in time for Zack and I to go on our date.
Oh my God!
I certainly did not anticipate this.
Damon: hello
Me: yes, I'll see you then. Bye.
I clicked the phone off.
"Well?"
"What are you talking about?" I had plainly forgotten the question he had posed.
"Can you tell me what order you're getting—"
"About that, yes. I need to finish a project. So I was thinking maybe next Tuesday?" I inquired, embarrassed. His face fell, and I felt like a jerk for making him upset. He had never made me feel this way before, and a pit of dread had formed in my stomach.
"What exactly is the project about?"
"Uhm...Well, you know a little bit about calculus." I lied. I am aware that when I do saying all of these falsehoods, I will be awarded a medal. "I require this grade." I said,
So he could feel sorry for me, I used a fiendish tone. "Please don't be upset with me." I was speaking in broader terms; I don't know what I would do if he discovered that I didn't have a project but was just acting as an escort.
"I'm not furious with you, baby. Just see if you can free your calendar for next Tuesday."
"Of course," I said, nodding. McDonald's Tuesdays were our small customs that kept our romance going. We set aside everything for just those two of us.
***************
"Did you say yes?" Mala pushed, her gaze fixed on me, awaiting my reaction.
"Sure, but I—"
She pressed her fingers over my lips, stopping me from expressing myself. "I'll tell you one more time, Beth. That kid is bankrupt. Fine if you want to keep him around. But you can't be mushy or prioritize your personal life over money."
I slapped her hands away, rolling my eyes. That doesn't seem fair; just because Damon spent money on me doesn't imply I should neglect myself for her.
"How is that possible?"
"You did the math and figured it out. If Damon wants anything, you give it to her flawlessly, and she pays you money. Money that will be really beneficial to you. More than that hippie freak could do."
"Don't you ever simply want some alone time?" My hands were crossed over my chest. I see what she's saying. But I still have a life to live. I still have things to do, and Damon should be aware of them.
"I do have time. Beth, what's the big deal? She only wants you for an event and to spend the night with her. You are paid, and your little debt is discharged. It's a win-win situation."
I sighed and sank into my bed. I took the pillow and pushed it on my face to hide my furious scream.
Mala pulled the cushion from my grasp. "You're a big girl, Beth. You are free to do whatever you desire. You aren't married. There is no pledge to withhold."
"I really like Zack."
"And, as I've already stated, love does not pay the bills. Accept it and get down and dirty. If necessary, dump him."
"No," I said, shaking my head. My eyes welled up with tears, and dumping Zack was out of the question. I've gone through a lot, and his shoulder was the one that caught my tears; I doubt I'll ever meet someone like Zack, and to put it simply, I can't live without him.
"Do you believe I can obtain what I want from Damon and then leave?"
"If you leave too soon, you'll be back at square one. You need this." She was correct. I really need this. "Do you like the sex so far?"
"No," I said flatly. That, I believe, is a deception. She caressed places I had no idea could be touched, and her kissing was on another level, making me moist and melting all at the same time.
"Stop deceiving yourself. The more you do it, the more intricate it becomes."
"I like it, but that doesn't imply it's correct."
"Life is about surviving and doing whatever it takes to make it," she sneered. "You need to face reality." My mind debates whether I should genuinely break up with Zack. But then I looked at it from a different angle. Damon and I aren't going to be around forever.
Zack and I intended to move to another major city and use our degrees after graduation, so then, I could put everything behind me and focus on us.
