MAISIE was at the playground at the bottom of one of the structures. it was her first day of preschool. she hadn't made any friends yet, and was scared she would never find one. she was selling leaves, pretending they were food, in exchange for wood chips. a boy approached the play structure, and maisie was excited to have her first customer.
"hey. what leaves do you have?" the boy had straight brown hair and was wearing short with his uniform polo.
"umm.. so.. i have big leaves," she placed a leaf on the plastic surface, "a small leaf, and leaf sprinkles." the leaf sprinkles were just ripped up leaves bunched up.
"you have ugly leaves. i don't want them."
"wait! i have nice leaves, look." she put another leaf on the plastic. the boy still looked uninterested, so she grabbed a whole bunch of leaves and offered them to him.
"why do you only have ugly leaves? i don't like you or your leaves."
this was a big deal for a 4 year old. she was talking to a mean boy. just then, another little boy approached her shop. he had blonde hair and blue eyes.
"i like her leaves," he told the mean boy, then turned to maisie. "hi, i'm matt... and i like your leaves. i want some."
"of course!" she smiled as she mispronounced the word. pushing some leaves toward him, she continued, "my real name is maysen, but everybody calls me maisie. mister matt, i will give you all these leaves for.. um," she grabbed 4 wood chips from the ground. "for this many woods!"
"okay," matt said. he handed her 4 wood chips, then turned to the mean boy that had been standing there the whole time. "maybe if you be nice like my mommy told me, you will get leaves. now i can make food for my brothers!" he turned to maisie. "thank you miss maisie. want to cook this with me and my brothers?"
"yes! my mommy told me to be nice too, and she makes a sald with leaves! its a food that she eats."
"wow! my mommy makes sald too. let's go make sald."
maisie had made a friend. multiple friends, after she met nick and chris. after they ate their pretend "sald", they played for the rest of the day. at reading time right before school ended, they all sat together on the carpet.
after matt got home that day, he climbed up onto a stool and watched his mom make some salad—sald, for him.
"guess what mommy?" matt was excited to tell her that he cooked just like her.
"yes, honey?" his mom listened.
"today, i gave a girl woods for some leaves. her name is maise. and then guess what?!"
"what happened?"
"we made sald, me and chris and nick and maise! just like you, mommy!
"you guys made a salad? that's amazing!" she walked over to matt and squeezed his cheeks, "my little chef."
the next day, their parents all found out that they lived in the same neighborhood. their houses were close, too. turns out, the campbells were the family that had just recently moved in down their street.
every day without fail since then, they would go to each other's houses or go to the neighborhood park together.
their friendship was magical. it only ever grew.
they were forever.
those two little babies never knew that they would end.
not like that.
