Inés strolled through the city, the encounter with Dianne lingering in her thoughts. As she reached for her phone, a message from Trent illuminated the screen.
Trent: Hey, Inés. It's been a while. How have you been?
She considered her response, the words dancing on the edge of nostalgia. However, before she could reply, Javier, her current boyfriend, noticed the incoming message.
"Who's Trent?" Javier's tone carried a hint of suspicion, his eyes narrowing as he glanced at Inés's phone.
"Inés, you never mentioned a Trent," he continued, his curiosity turning into a palpable tension.
Inés hesitated for a moment, feeling the weight of the unspoken history between her and Trent. "He's... an old friend."
Javier's expression darkened. "Old friend, huh? Why is he texting you out of the blue?"
Inés sensed the brewing storm and attempted to diffuse it. "Javier, he's just checking in. We go way back, that's all."
Javier, however, wasn't easily appeased. He snatched the phone from Inés's hand, his eyes scanning the conversation.
Trent: Missed talking to you. How about catching up sometime?
Javier's face tightened with a mixture of jealousy and suspicion. "Catching up? What does he want, Inés?"
Inés, caught in the whirlwind of emotions, tried to maintain composure. "Javier, he's just being friendly. We haven't spoken in ages."
Javier's grip on the phone tightened. "Friendly? Seems more than that to me."
As tensions simmered between Inés and Javier, the unexpected ripple caused by Trent's message threatened to unravel the carefully woven threads of Inés's present. The echoes of the past resonated in the air, casting an unsettling shadow over the evolving dynamics of her life.
