12 ⨳ the invitation

IT WAS A SUNNY DAY, where mrs. choi called hayul on the phone to invite him to iseul's welcome party as soon as iseul arrived to seoul. she knew it was important for iseul to have a welcoming event after such an exhausting ordeal.

she gave detailed instructions to the other maidservants as they prepared for the special occasion.

the food items were carefully chosen to be exquisite and delicious, and the atmosphere was one of warmth and hospitality.

"it's been quite a while since we last saw each other, hasn't it?" mrs. choi said and was delighted to see hayul again after so long. her expression was welcoming and friendly, and hayul couldn't help but feel at ease in her presence.

mrs. choi, after taking her seat, instructed the maidservants to summon minjun and iseul along with chaeyoung without knowing she's sick at this point.

there was a moment of silence as the maidservants left the room, only to return with an unamused and stubborn minjun together with iseul who had a beaming smile on her face as soon as she saw hayul.

"hayul! i've missed you" iseul scream in joy and hug hayul tightly as minjun just rolled his eyes, annoyed. minjun was clearly reluctant to join them, and he gave no indication of wanting to take part in the dinner.

on the other hand, mrs. choi was wondering where chaeyoung was when she asked the maidservants. the servant whispers that chaeyoung was feeling sick and needed some rest. mrs. choi was disappointed that chaeyoung wasn't able to join them, but she understood the need for her to rest.

when mrs. choi nodded her head, her attention turned towards iseul, who couldn't contain her excitement towards hayul. iseul's eyes were twinkling as she spoke to hayul. she couldn't help but gush about how much she missed him and how happy she was to see him.

mrs. choi watched their interaction with a gentle smile, delighting in the joy and affection between them. mrs. choi always knew that iseul had a massive crush on hayul since they were kids. unfortunately, hayul only sees her as a little sister he never have.

however, minjun, annoyed and unwilling to participate in the conversation, responded in a sarcastic tone. "are you both finished discussing your vigorous life? does anyone here care about how i feel?" he snapped.

mrs. choi, clearly infuriated by minjun's attitude and frequent interruptions, spoke up. "minjun, why can't you behave yourself? can't you see that iseul is trying to have a conversation with hayul?" she said, her voice quivering with anger.

minjun burst into a furious rage at being criticized by his mother. "it's bad to bring hayul here since he wasn't welcome at the first place though." he snapped.

"what did you say?" mrs. choi blew her cool, rising her voice in volume. she was clearly not pleased with minjun's attitude.

"i brought hayul here because i know how important this is to iseul, and i thought she'd be happy to see him. but all you want to do is ruin this moment for her. you're being selfish and immature," mrs. choi yelled at minjun, who was now furious and yelled back.

"you bring hayul here, only to piss me off and upset me. you know how much i dislike him and you still brought him here. and now you're trying to manipulate him and iseul to get them together."

at this moment, iseul and hayul froze on their place. "wha-" before hayul could answer, mrs. choi interfere.

"what do you mean, manipulate? i'm not the one manipulating anyone here," mrs. choi scoffed. "and don't talk to me like that to your own mother, minjun. if only your father didn't left me before you are born, you wouldn't act like that like your reckless father who never wanting you to be his son!"

now minjun was completely speechless. he had never expected his mother to bring up his father, who had abandoned them when he was young. he looked at his mother in shock, too stunned to even respond. it looked like mrs. choi had hit a sensitive point.

mrs. choi suddenly realized she had crossed a line with her son. she realized her words had hurt him deeply, and she regretted it deeply. as she saw his shocked face, she was now the one who couldn't say a word. she tried to apologize to him, but the words couldn't come out of her mouth.

hayul was left in a state of shock and confusion. he had never expected to be dragged into this family conflict. he never wanted to cause any problems between minjun and his mother. he was a pacifist and didn't want to get involved in other people's disputes.

after the deep silent, minjun stood up and walked out of the dinning table as he went to his room, needing some time to process what just happened.

"minjun-" before his mother could say anything minjun already slammed the door shut making them flinched on how furious minjun was.

"oh my goodness, i'm a terrible mother, aren't i? i should have never said that to minjun. i should have handled the situation more compassionately, and not let my emotions get the best of me. i really messed up back there," mrs. choi sighed while massaging her forehead.

as hayul and iseul tried to calm mrs. choi down, the maidservants couldn't help but discuss what they just witnessed. they wondered how the welcoming party turned into such a chaotic and unpleasant situation. the mood was now filled with tension and awkwardness.
