Midnight Melody was a sweet filly with a passion for music. Wherever she went music followed. Unfortunately, Midnight's parents, Banal and Arid, disapproved of her love for music and thought that any sort of music was the Devil's noise. When Midnight told them that she dreamed of being a musician when she grew up, they told her that she would drop the aspiration immediately because 'it is an unrealistic childish fantasy and nothing more'. From that point on, Midnight never mentioned music again. Except for the times she was alone with her older brother, Daydream. Daydream was fifteen years older than Midnight and so he had suffered many more years of childhood trauma than she. He knew how devastating it was to have parents like theirs and so he vowed to always be her escape because he never had one.  They would converse for hours about all types of music and pondered every what if they could.

Midnight looked up to him more than she ever did her father and so for her tenth birthday, Daydream bought her her very own keyboard. Their parents were not pleased in the slightest. "Why would you disobey us like this, Daydream? Why must you entertain her idiotic fantasies?" Daydream scoffed, "Who are you to call Midnight idiotic? You both have done nothing with your measly lives but mentally torture both of your children. I got her that keyboard because she is an amazing kid and she deserves it. I'm sick of the way you two speak to her." He shook his head and his parents looked dumbfounded. "OUT." his father bellowed.

Midnight tried her best to ignore the arguments but when she heard her father she turned around hastily in shock. "Why is this happening? Why, why, WHY?!" The room was spinning and Midnight felt lightheaded. Suddenly, she burst into tears just as her brother had left the house. She kicked and kicked until her keyboard was smashed to pieces. Horror washed over her face. What had she done? The last present he had given her and she had broken it. Her parents had an evil grin on their faces, as if their hopes and dreams had just come true. Midnight was furious but she said nothing. She quietly got up and left the room, hiding in her bedroom.

Years later, Midnight had left her house at sixteen and had turned to busking on the street for money. She sang songs, played guitar and even performed poems. One day, Princess Twilight was roaming the streets of Canterlot when she noticed Midnight singing a song. The voice was angelic, it flowed through the air and her ears like a clear sky on a warm summer day. Twilight needed to tell the pony how much she loved her singing so she approached Midnight once her song was over. "Miss, that was the most beautiful singing I have heard in a while. May I ask your name?" As they made eye contact, Twilight saw a sparkle in Midnight's eyes. She couldn't explain it but she just knew. Midnight was destined to become a princess and use her music to unify ponies. "Midnight Melody, your highness." Midnight replied while curtseying as best she could. "Midnight, tell me. Have you ever been to a place called Ponyville?" Midnight shook her head in response. "Ponyville was where I started out, where I met my friends and started my journey to where I am now. I believe you have great things in your future and that your beginning is there. Ponyville." Twilight gave a smile to Midnight and Midnight smiled back. Twilight walked away, leaving Midnight contemplating her next move. The next day, she got the train to Ponyville and when she arrived she immediately knew great thing would happen for her there.
