Harry and I were called to get up. We crawled out of the cupboard under the stairs. I headed to the kitchen while Harry went to the door to collect the newspaper and letters. Harry returned with a peculiar letter addressed to me:

Ms. R. Potter The Cupboard under the Stairs 4 Privet Drive Little Whinging, Surrey.

As Harry and I began to open it, Dudley snatched the letter from our hands and handed it to Uncle Vernon. "Hey, that's ours!" Harry protested.

Uncle Vernon laughed and said, "Who would be writing to you two?" He turned the letter over, and his expression changed. He looked at Aunt Petunia, who stood beside him with her arms crossed. Then, he pushed Dudley, Harry, and me out of the kitchen, closing the door behind us.

We could hear them whispering, but it was clear they were concerned about the letters. Uncle Vernon emerged, ripping the letters into pieces, and went to the living room to burn them in the fireplace.

A short while later, more letters came through the door. Vernon ran to grab them before we could. He ripped them up and burned them, laughing and smiling.

Later, as the letters stopped coming, Uncle Vernon, Dudley, and Aunt Petunia sat in the living room. Harry poured coffee into Uncle Vernon's cup, and I handed out cookies. Suddenly, letters flew in from the fireplace. Harry and I each caught one and tried to run, but Uncle Vernon caught us, yelling, "That's it, we're going away!"

On the Island

Uncle Vernon took his wife, son, niece, and nephew to an isolated island to escape the letters. It was a stormy night, and Harry and I lay awake on the floor while Dudley slept on the couch. We made a makeshift birthday cake out of dust and quietly celebrated.

"Happy birthday, brother. Make a wish," I whispered.

"Happy birthday, sis. Make a wish," Harry replied.

We blew the dust candles out. Suddenly, there was a loud banging on the door as the storm raged outside. Dudley stepped back, while Harry and I hid behind a wall. The door flew open, revealing a giant figure with long hair standing in the doorway.

"Sorry about that," he said as he lifted the fallen door back into place.

Uncle Vernon, angry, shouted, "I demand that you leave at once. You are breaking!"

The man walked over to Uncle Vernon, who held a gun. "Dry up, Dursley, you great prune," he said, bending the gun barrel.

He then turned to Dudley. "I haven't seen you two since you were babies, Harry and Rose. You're a bit bigger than I expected."

"I'm not Harry or Rose," Dudley stammered.

Harry and I stepped forward. "We are."

"Of course you two are," the man said, handing us a box. "Afraid I sat on it, but I imagine it'll taste fine just the same. I baked it myself, words and all."

We opened the box together, revealing a cake with our names written in green icing. "Thank you," we said.

"It's not every day your young man and woman turn 11, is it?" he said, sitting on the couch and lighting a fire with his umbrella. Harry and I were amazed.

"Excuse me, but who are you?" we asked simultaneously, smiling at each other.

"Rubeus Hagrid, keeper of keys and grounds at Hogwarts. Of course, you both know about Hogwarts," he said.

"Sorry, no," we replied.

Hagrid looked surprised. "No? Blow me, Harry, and Rose. Didn't you ever wonder where your mom and dad learned it all?"

"Learned what?" Harry asked.

"You're a witch and a wizard, Rose and Harry," Hagrid said.

"We are what?" we asked, skeptical.

"A witch and a wizard. Some good ones, I'd wager, once you're trained up a little."

"No, you've made a mistake. We mean, we can't be a witch and a wizard. We're just Rose and Harry," we protested.

"Well, just Rose and Harry, did you ever make anything happen? Something you couldn't explain when you were angry or scared?" Hagrid asked. He handed us two letters from his pocket.

We turned them over and read them:

Dear Ms./Mr. Potter, We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Uncle Vernon stormed over. "They will not be going. We swore when we took them in, we'd put a stop to this rubbish."

"You knew? You knew all along and never told us?" we exclaimed.

"Of course, we knew," Aunt Petunia said. "My perfect sister being who she was. My parents were so proud the day she got her letter. We have a witch in the family, isn't it wonderful? I was the only one to see her for what she was, a freak. Then she met that Potter and had you two. I knew you would be the same, just as strange, just as abnormal. And then she got herself blown up, and we got landed with you."

"Blown up? You told us our parents died in a car crash," we said, incredulous.

"A car crash? A crash killed Lily and James Potter?" Hagrid roared. "We had to say something," Aunt Petunia muttered.

"It's an outrage, a scandal!" Hagrid fumed. "They are going," he declared.

"A great muggle like you is going to stop them?" Hagrid challenged Uncle Vernon.

"Muggle?" we asked.

"Non-magic folk. Those two have their names down ever since they were born. They're going to the finest school of witchcraft and wizardry in the world, and they'll be under the finest headmaster Hogwarts has ever seen, Albus Dumbledore," Hagrid said.

"I will not pay to have some crackpot old fool teach them magic tricks," Uncle Vernon snapped.

Hagrid aimed his umbrella at Vernon. "Never insult Albus Dumbledore in front of me," he warned. We heard a noise and saw Dudley with his face on the cake. Hagrid pointed his umbrella at Dudley's behind, turning it into a pig's tail. Dudley, Aunt Petunia, and Uncle Vernon screamed and chased after Dudley to help him.

Hagrid looked at us, smiling. "I'd appreciate it if you both didn't tell anyone about that. Strictly speaking, I'm not allowed to do magic," he said.

"Okay," we agreed.

Hagrid checked his watch. "Uh-oh, we're a bit behind schedule. Better be off, unless you'd rather stay?" He opened the door, and it fell again. He stepped outside into the storm. Harry and I glanced at each other and then followed him out into the night.
