The Story

In the pitch-black night, Chris ran through the desolate streets of the city, the distant echoes of haunting moans and guttural growls chilling his spine. His heart pounded against his chest so hard he was afraid the infected would hear it, his breath coming in ragged gasps. Panic gripped him as he navigated through the chaotic labyrinth of death, haunted by shadows, and chased like an animal.

His footsteps echoed through the eerie silence of the city, each one a desperate plea for safety. He darted through narrow alleyways, ducking behind rusted cars and debris, but the relentless pursuit of the infected never wavered. They didn't get tired, after all. Chris could feel them closing in, their breaths heavy, their moans growing louder and more sinister.

Exhaustion gripped his trembling legs, and he knew he couldn't keep running. He reached his breaking point, his knees buckling as he stumbled and fell to the unforgiving pavement. He tried to rise, but his body refused to cooperate. Every muscle ached, his mind screamed for release from this nightmare.

Desperation overtook him as he looked up ahead of him, and his wide, desperate eyes locked with the paralyzing gaze of Nick. "Nick! Help me, please!" he cried out, his voice filled with terror and despair. He stretched his trembling hand toward his brother. In that chilling moment, the world stood still, suspended in the agony of the night.

But Nick just stood there, frozen in place, his face etched with an indescribable mixture of anguish and powerlessness. He watched helplessly as the infected descended upon Chris, their eyes vacant, their teeth bared, tearing into his flesh. The nightmare played out before him as his brother was attacked, and Nick was unable to intervene.

Nick shot up from the bed with a gut-wrenching scream that echoed in the darkest corners of his soul. He screamed and he cried, thrashing around wildly, his chest heaved, and his body was drenched in cold sweat.

Arms were on him a moment later and Nick instinctively started fighting them, until he hears the familiar soothing voice of his (maybe only living) brother. "Shhhh, you're okay, I'm here, I've got you, we're safe, shhh", Matt kept repeating, calmly and quietly, while hugging Nick close and lightly rocking them back and forth. "You're alright kid. It was just a nightmare."

Nick wanted to calm down, but was still to shaken, he was still crying and lightly shaking as he started explaining what his dream was about. "It was... it felt so real. It was about Chris, I left him behind to die again."

Matt tightened their hug and started rubbing circles on Nick's back. "Hey, it was just a dream. We didn't leave Chris, we've been over this. He's also not dead. He's strong, remember? He'll find his way back to us."

Nick shuddered as he replayed the horrifying dream in his mind. "I can't help it, Matt. We haven't heard from him in so long, basically anything could've happened."

Matt understood Nick's concerns all too well. "I know, I know. I've been worried sick too, it's all I can think about. But we have to believe in Chris. He's coming home to us as fast as he can."

They remained cuddled up together, but didn't fall back asleep that night.

Two months had passed since the outbreak and Chris's departure for the cabin. They hadn't heard a word from him (or any other family or friends) in almost a month and a half now, since the phone lines went down. They knew that realistically at least a few of them had likely been killed by now, but they avoided thinking about it, keeping busy with the never-ending tasks, in hopes of preparing themselves for the upcoming winter months.
