'Tay! We're on in 5 minutes!' Daneel screeched through the door. 'Yeah, yeah. I'm almost done' I yelled back, checking myself out in the dressing room mirror.
I looked like the real me, the one nobody knew about. My ripped black skinny jeans were stuffed into combat boots and my midriff baring tank top advertised Pink Floyd. My long, now wavy, jet black hair was loose and you could see the pink streaks I'd added just for tonight. They'd be gone by school on Monday as would the dark eye liner, exchanged for my other self. Clothed in 'popular clothes' and a ponytail.
I lived for the weekend and for band practices, when I could be the real me and not be judged by anyone. I got picked on enough without coming in on monday dressed like a badass, thank you very much. I shook herself and headed for the door.
'Are you guys ready to rock this thing?' Seth yelled, holding his drum sticks in one hand and Daneel's hand in the other. Jared, the bass player and back up singer rolled his eyes and sarcastically repeated Seth's words, 'who says stuff like that anyways?' But we could all see the teasing look in his eye.
He looked like the kind of guy who could be a complete douche, but he was my best friend and a complete gentle- albeit womanizing- man.
'Okay guys, you ready?' Asked the stage manager sticking his head in the back room where we were waiting for the act before us finish up.
We followed him out and to the stage where he wished us good luck and then we all grinned at each other, and burst out. Daneel took to the mic, Hey guys! How're you tonight? We're Shineout and we're ready to party!' She yelled.
The crowd cheered, anticipation in the air. And as I put my hands on my guitar to start the opening riff of the first song I heard the yells the audience sent our way. I grinned and lost myself in the chords, my fingers flying across the strings as I played Back in Black by ACDC. We played for an hour or so, playing some we picked ourselves, a few we'd wrote and some people shouted out requests for.
As we wrapped up with our final song Seth nodded at me and I smirked, knowing what was next. This song was my favorite, just when it should've ended my part started. I had a sick solo Jared had decided the song needed and it was one of the most difficult things I'd ever learned for a set list. Not that it was very hard, I could play anything and everyone who'd ever heard me play could back that statement up. I don't mean to come across as prideful but, well, I could.
When I finished I put on a cocky grin and and winked at a guy in the front row who was open mouth gaping at me.
We thanked everyone for coming and left the stage all hyped up and on a performance high. 'You guys kicked butt out there!' Squealed Lillian, Jared's twin sister a moment later as she burst backstage and threw her arms around her brother before grabbing my hands and dancing around the room with me, both of us shrieking with laughter.
Everyone was yelling and I almost didn't hear my cell phone when it went off. I held up a single finger to Lil and slipped out into the hall to answer it.
'Hello?' 'Tay? Where are you? We were supposed to meet for coffee.' Came Alex's voice filled with irritation. 'Alex! I'm so sorry! I completely forgot!' I apologized to my brother feeling horrible about what I'd done.'I'm on my way now,' I lied as I ran to the dressing room stripping off my shirt and unzipping my pants as I hung up, not waiting for his reply.
I threw on a pair of light wash jeans and a sweater with Uggs. My combat boots were so much more comfortable than these things. At least they were warm, the spring weather was rather chilly tonight.
I quickly stuck my head in the sink, running warm water through it and watched as the pink dye washed down the drain. I quickly troweled it enough that it wasn't dripping and threw it up in a ballerina bun. I raced out the door only to run back in, having forgotten to take off my heavy makeup.
'Guys I have to go, meeting Alex for coffee!' I yelled to my friends, 'amazing job tonight!' I grinned racing out the door with no worries about being recognized. I look like a completely different person dressed like this, and besides no one from school would ever come to a place like this.
