Dorrie knew that school was about to be hell for Jackie. Silver Falls was a small town, and so any change was a big deal. And she knew the poor girl had no idea what she was walking into.
Most days she would catch a ride with the Walter van, but because Jackie had arrived, her seat was taken. So, she was forced to drive herself instead. It's not that she disliked driving, but she loved spending the drive with other people. Her car was too quiet for her liking, but she knew she'd get used to it eventually.
Pulling into an empty space, she took a second to sit and finish her makeup for the day in her mirror. When she was finished she grabbed her water bottle and bag and exited her car just as the rowdy van of Walters pulled into the empty space next to her.
"How was your drive?" Isaac said as he got out of the car as fast as he could, running over to give Dorrie a quick hug and mess with her hair before they headed to their first period class.
"Quiet," she joked. "Yours?"
"Poor girl has no idea what she walked into."
Dorrie turned around to check on Jackie only to see Erin and Cole making out right outside the car. She liked Erin- really, she did. They ran track together and had some mutual friends. But the girl was territorial and as soon as she heard that Dorrie and Cole were friends she started icing out the Banks girl from their group. "I didn't know they were back together."
"I think Cole just found out too," Isaac joked, looking warily at Dorrie. He knew the girl had some sort of feelings for his cousin, but he wanted to give her space to talk to him about it when she felt ready. Dorrie didn't like being pushed, and he knew that all too well.
"Erin's about to make Jackie Public Enemy Number One for even riding in their car."
"You ride in our car every day and you were friends until the year started," he pointed out.
"But she's new. Erin hates new things," Dorrie responded. They continued to talk as they walked to class and sat in their usual seats, next to each other. Danny, Isaac, and Dorrie all shared AP Lit together, and it was one of the highlights of their days because their teacher, Mr. Watkins, was fun and always let them out if they finished their work early. On those days, the three would usually run to the vending machines and go find a place near the football field to eat and chill. Danny needed to run to the auditorium to grab something he'd left a few days prior, so they didn't walk with him like they usually did.
"Anything I missed in the last five minutes?" Danny asked once he settled into the seat behind Isaac and diagonal from Dorrie.
"Erin and Cole were making out in the parking lot, Jenna Burns got a haircut and her bangs look amazing, the news about Jackie arriving with you guys is spreading like wildfire, and Isaac wants to get smoothies after school." Dorrie wasn't a gossip, per se, but she definitely liked to listen. She could tell what was going on from a mile away most days, and she and Isaac prided themselves on always being in the know.
"I'd be down for smoothies. You want to drive?" Danny replied. "There's no way Cole's staying a minute past 3:30 and going anywhere but home so you're our only hope."
"I'll drive," Dorrie conceded.
"Can I ride with you tomorrow?" Isaac whined. "I can't stand being in a car with Alex ogling Jackie the entire time."
"Fine, but only if you let me choose the music."
"Not a chance."
"Fine."
By the time they reached lunch, Dorrie had almost forgotten about the new addition to the school. She was so wrapped up in her work that she barely noticed Jackie standing alone in the cafeteria until Isaac elbowed her side.
