It's Monday, 9am, a motorcade arrives at Waystar's New York office building. Jonathan steps out of his car determined, followed by Scott and other members of his team from Europe.
They head to the floor containing the most important offices, taking in the activity and buzz of the busy space. Jonathan greets a few familiar faces as he makes his way to his new office, settling his team.
Jonathan exits his office, greeting Karolina in the hallway with a smile. He heads over to Gerri's office, taking a moment outside of the door to collect himself. He then enters the office, walking over to Gerri's desk and standing there. "Hi there Gerri! Long time no see," he said.
"Well hello there Jonathan. It's been too long. How are you?" Gerri smiled.
"I'm fine," he smiled softly as he's eyes focused on Gerri.
"Why are you looking at me like that, Jonathan?" she said worried, yet in a playful tone.
"It's been 10 years since we last saw each other and 20 years since I've been here; in Waystar."
"That is true. And you look wonderful. You hardly age." She chuckled, "is there something you want?"
"I wanted to tell you that I was the one who told Tom to bring you back as General Counsel." He seems to hold back his words.
"You didn't say it just to tell me. There was a motive behind it. What were you hoping to get out of it?"
"Nothing really. You're just the only one I trust to be a grown up here in this shit hole." He chuckled as he got closer to Gerri.
"You came all the way here, Jonathan, after all those years, to say you trust me?" in a skeptical tone.
"Oh, come on, Gerri!" He almost yelled and tried to contain himself. "I'm not a child; I'm not Roman. Aren't you glad that you're back? If not, you are free to go." He lowered his voice and his gaze.
Gerri remained silent, yet her thoughts were so vivid in the room that Jonathan could hear them. He smirked.
"I'm glad, Jonathan. Very glad." She said with a smile.
"Well, now that we got that out of the way," he sat down at one of the chairs in front of Gerri's desk, as he got himself comfortable, "as you know, my dear cousin Logan is dead, Tom fucking Wambsgans is CEO of Waystar Royco, and Mayson is back to Europe. I have 6% of the company and I want to be on the Board Council. Give me your thoughts and suggestions!" he said ecstatically.
"Whoa! Hold on! Your cousin's corpse isn't even cold and you already want in on the board. That's... a bit premature. I think you should wait at least... six weeks.
"You're being funny Gerri..." Jonathan said in a sarcastic tone leaving the silence do the talk as his eyes looked directly at Gerri's.
"You want my advice, Jonathan? Here it is: Tom needs a friend, and you're the only one who can fill that void. He's very, very insecure. He needs someone he can trust, and you have the best chance of giving him that comfort. Don't you dare bring up Waystar Royco or the board or any of that bullshit. Just be there for him."
"Why do you care for Tom?" Jonathan made a pause to think. "Nah, let me say why... because you... You Gerri...", he yelled, "you care for Waystar!"
"Of course I do!" Gerri slightly got off her chair, now seated at its corner. "We spent a lifetime building this company and we're not about to let it crumble in the hands of a bunch of petty idiots, like you know who. We must be the ones to set the standard, to prove that it's possible to be ethical and successful, and that the two can coexist. I don't want my legacy to be giving up on all the hard work we've put into this family business, that's for damn sure!"
