As consciousness returned, the sound of approaching footsteps gently tugged me back to reality. My eyes fluttered open to find Layla seated beside me, her presence a comforting anchor in the maelstrom of confusion. We were in our old holiday home nestled in the woods, a place once synonymous with tranquility, now a refuge amid an unraveling world.

"Mum, what's happening?" Layla's voice trembled with unease.

Embracing her, I felt a surge of protective love. "I'm not sure, darling," I murmured, my mind clouded with uncertainty.

After freshening up, I ventured into the living room, a surreal scene unfolded before me. My parents, whom I had mourned for years, were alive and conversing with Ivan. Beside them, a woman named Luanne – my supposed sister – was bustling in the kitchen. The familiarity in their interactions was jarring, their presence both comforting and alien.

Luanne approached with a bright smile. "Hey sis, we're making chicken lasagna, your favorite," she chimed. Her knowledge of my preferences added another layer of bewilderment to my already disoriented state.

Cradling the warm cup of tea my mother handed me, its familiar taste evoked a cascade of memories. My ears tuned into a conversation between Ivan and my father, discussing a terrifying scenario Ivan's colleague Chase had shared. Chase, a man I knew only through Ivan's occasional mentions, was supposedly coming by with supplies and, hopefully, some answers.

Ivan's voice was laced with worry. "Chase mentioned a bizarre occurrence at an Irish lab – something about an experiment with atoms that might have altered reality itself," he explained. The theory was outlandish, yet it resonated with the chaos around us.

"The world's gone mad," my father mused, his brow furrowed in concern. "People seeing loved ones long passed... It's like we're living in a twisted dream."

Retreating to my room, the weight of their words pressed heavily upon me. Had a scientific anomaly really catapulted me into an alternate universe? A reality where my family was intact, but Bruce, my beloved brother, was seemingly erased from existence?

Ivan, once the cornerstone of my life, now felt like a stranger, his infidelity a lingering shadow in my mind. Luanne, a sister I had no memory of, was an enigma wrapped in a veneer of familial warmth, challenging my trust.

The children, however, seemed unperturbed, accepting Luanne with an ease that stung my heart with the loss of Bruce.

As I grappled with these thoughts, the prospect of Chase's arrival loomed. Ivan had mentioned he might hold some insights into this bewildering new world. But a part of me feared what those insights might unveil – about this altered reality, the fate of my brother, and the very fabric of the life I once knew.
