Ever since she came into this world, Mari was quiet.
She never cried or fussed, not even on the day she was born. As she grew she stayed quiet, watching those around her with mild yet silent interest.
Everyone eventually called her Mouse more than her own name.
"Let's go see the snow, little Mouse. It's the first of the year." Mother scooped her up and took her out to the yard, soft flakes falling from the clouded sky and a white blanket of sparkle covering the ground.
"Snow!" Mouse exclaims, pointing to the sky and clapping.
Her first word.
