A spark from his house hit Dream in the arm, burning some skin off instantly. He winced but redirected his attention to his house burning to the ground along with his mom, dad, and baby sister. Tears fell from his green eyes, his whole village turned amber like a sunset, black smoke of ashes and flames flying like fireflies blinking in the night sky. Screams could be heard from all around him, his mother from the top floor called his name, throwing him her white mask with a smiling face and pretty daisy flower in the top right corner. He slid the mask in his brown messenger bag that was too big for his 8-year-old body, along with all the other Dreamon masks of his friends and other family that could not wear it any longer. A whistle could be heard echoing through the village streets and finding its way to his ears. The hair on the back of Dream's neck stood up, goosebumps scattering across his arms and legs. "No, not yet" Dream mumbled to himself, fear taking over his whole body as he froze where he stood on the ruffled dead grass on his ashy lawn. The two creatures turned the corner from a few blocks away, their eyes locked, their mouths forming O's and that spine chilling whistle that echoed through the whole village knowing just where to find him, shaking in terror, tears spilling out of his eyes that blurred his vision. He picked himself up, shifting his feet towards the dark forest and without thinking, he took off. The messenger bag was heavy and slowed him down a bit, pulling at his shoulder. He broke through the trees, branches scrapped and scratched everywhere that had no skin coverage. He winced at every cut but pushed his legs forward, faster, hearing the creature's footsteps snapping loose twigs on the muddy forest ground, their pants and heaves of breath that he could feel on the back of his neck and their growling of hunger to rip him to shreds just like everyone else he had left behind in that fiery hell. His legs cramped and ached, his heart was thumping in his head, his breath going ragged and uneven, his vision was giving out and was going black, but he pushed on. The creatures behind him were slowing down he could tell by the lack of breath, twigs snapping, and hungry growling but was soon replaced by willow birds singing through the green leaves that blocked some sunlight, the sound of leaves dancing together way up, the sound of water dripping and swirling together in a fox trot, and the sound of his heart everywhere in his limbs. He burst through a clump of bushes and thick shady oak trees into a clearing, where he saw a boy, about his age with a red mushroom cap that was three times bigger than his head. He was crouched on his knees as a deer ate from his palm. The boy had brown wavy locks, black as coal doe eyes, pale skin that complimented his peach lips, some small and thin fungi and mushrooms that grew from all over his body. Dream's breath hitched on his throat and made him choke catching the attention of the boy, the deer took off running but still boy stayed still, stood up and looked at him with interest. Dream gained control again still coughing but hiding them to not look weak and stupid, but that earned him a cute giggle from the boy below the hill. Dream raised his hand and gave a respectful wave to which the brunette returned. Without warning he was thrown on his stomach as one of the creatures had pounced on his back, pinning him down as the other clawed at his back and face, Dream screamed as he tried to fight them off but given the position, he just could not save himself. They kept mauling him, drawing blood and painful screams and cries for help until all his vision went black. The last thing he remembered was being carried with soft hands through the clearing, sunlight pouring over him as the leaves danced for him and the birds sang their sorrow songs for him.
That was 16 years ago.
Now, Dream sat up in his bed raising his arms above his head to stretch. He groaned as his shoulders popped and cracked. He swung his legs over the side of the bed and stood, he wobbled but regained his composure, grabbing his smile mask from his bedside table and wrapping it around his head, buckling the leather strap to its 3rd last hole. Just in time for a knock to ring through his wooden room, "come in" Dream called, adjusting his mask in the cracked oval mirror that hung beside the door. "hey" A head of wavy brown hair poked through the crack of his door, George. Still, with the same red mushroom cap that stayed three times bigger than his head, mushroom that started growing the more he got older. "Morning sleeping beauty! You have been asleep for far too long" George mocked, shaking his head in disapproval with a fond smile. "No, I have been awake for a while I just did not want to leave" Dream turned to the boy in the doorway with his mask secured, "Mhm I am sure you were" He mocked, his British accent revealed making his short mockery pop. "I'm serious" Dream laughed which caused a chain reaction as George bursted out into laughter too. Another knock on the door made both men silence and look to the wooden oval door that had moss decorating the outline and a few toadstools scattering all over it. "Are you guys done making out in there?" A cracked voice came from the other side which made the 2 men continue their laughing fit, "shut up, it's natural!" The boy on the other side opened the door revealing his shaggy long black hair with a white bandana neatly wrapped around his forehead and a stumbled face. He was crossing his arms while glaring at his 2 best friends. Still passing giggles around they settled, "anything you guys want to do today?" George piped up, "archery?" Sapnap suggested, "we did that yesterday, why not just explore the woods?" Dream blinked under his mask while his friends thought about the idea, nobody had objected so they all agreed. Walking out of the blonde's small hut, they continued down a dirt path that had shiny rocks that glistened in the sunlight separating the green grass and the path from each other. "Good morning boys!" All 3 looked where the voice came from as their eyes landed on a girl around their age with fading pink hair, waving at them as she stood in the archery zone, arrows flying behind her all coordinatingly looking like a cool movie scene. They waved back and continued their journey past the villagers who waved, smiled, and greeted each other. Except some, ignoring Dream as he was not one of them originally, he was a Dreamon which were feared by most but since he had been young and they raised him as their own the village had no reason to fear him as he had no magic, again, since he was too young and never learned from his own kind. There were 2 boys, around their age, Fundy and Tommy who were the top haters. Since day one they glared at him like he had a disease, called him cruel names, threw pebbles and mud at him when they were younger once upon a time, and even growing a group who felt the same, scared, angry, and disgusted. The majority of the village liked Dream and even welcomed him in with loving and open arms like nothing was different or wrong about him, when in reality, he was messed up in the mind and physically. His mask hid his face for all those 16 years so no one knew what he looked like, Fundy and Tommy once tried to take his mask but failed miserably when George scared them off.
