Beep, beep, beep...
I opened my eyes, and all I knew at that point is that I am laying down in an unfamiliar place. I tried to get up, but I couldn't; I am feeling too tired to do that.
After a moment, two strangers entered the room. The lady looked happy with joyful tears. She came near me and said, "Thank God you are alright," in a tone of relief. I could do nothing but think why she is hoping for my good. Then the man took the lady out and came in again, asking, "How are you feeling?"
I didn't know what was happening. I asked him, "Where am I? Why am I laying here? And who was that lady?"
The man, with a serious look, said, "Huh, you don't know that lady." After taking a breath, he asked, "Do you remember your name?"
I did nothing but try hard to remember my name, and it is like I never had one. I didn't remember anything about anyone or even myself. Then the man introduced himself. He said, "I am a doctor, and you have been here in the hospital for the last 5 days. You were in a car accident, and you are Mr. Ryan." After that, he advised me to take some rest, and I will be discharged in the evening.
I could do nothing but lay there and rest. I closed my eyes and rested in the silence of that room.
In the evening, after providing me with medications, the doctor said I am ready to be discharged. I felt better than in the morning. When I was ready to leave, the same unfamiliar face came to me and gave me a helping hand. I asked her who she is and why she cares about me this much. I could see that she was trying hard not to let the tears fall. Then she said, "I am the love of your life; we are married, and my name is Sarah." I could do nothing but walk to the exit while she is helping me. At the entrance, there is a car waiting for us. Both of us got into the car.
As we are traveling to an unknown destination, I peeked out of the window and saw people in jackets. I asked Sarah what season it is. She replied, "It's early winter," with a cute smile on her face. I asked her why she is smiling like that. She said, "Winter's arc is your favorite time throughout the year, and you really enjoy this time." I followed up my question and asked why I love this time. Sarah replied, "Nobody knew it except you because whenever I asked you the same question, you just smiled and didn't answer."I nodded, and the conversation silenced. I don't know why, but I am feeling emotionally connected to Sarah. I couldn't do anything but feel relief while she is sitting next to me. I smiled as I realized why she said she is the love of my life. I rested my head on Sarah's shoulder; she smiled and laid her hand on my cheek.
After a while, we reached a house, and she helped me get in. As we entered the house, Sarah said, "This is our home; we live here happily." The house was not too big or too small, with plenty of space and a piano in the hall. I settled down on a bed in one of the rooms, and Sarah sat next to me. I asked her why I didn't remember anything.
She replied, telling me that due to the injury to my head, there was memory loss. She further elaborated that in these medical conditions, the injured person loses their identity and past memories.
I asked her how this happened. She told me that it occurred almost 6 days ago, on our first anniversary. I was bringing a surprise gift for her, but while riding back home in the car, the brakes failed, and I crashed.
After an hour, while both of us were having dinner, Sarah said, "Ryan, we are going to your old house where you spent your childhood. The doctor said it would help you heal and might bring back some old memories. I've made the arrangements."
I agreed, as I am healed enough for some traveling. After dinner, I sat in the hall near the piano and asked Sarah if she knew how to play it. She smiled and nodded, sitting at the piano, playing a beautiful melody. After some time, we reached the bedroom, and I settled into Sarah's arms, sleeping peacefully.
The next afternoon, we reached my old home near a mountain peak, with not many houses around. As we got in, I felt something strange. I couldn't remember anything, but the place seemed familiar. After settling down our carriage, I took a walk around the house. I saw an old picture and asked Sarah about the people in it. She said it is a pic of younger me with my parents, but they died during a robbery. I felt sad, but I didn't have any memories. As I walked around more, I found a letter. I cleaned the dust on it, opened it, and read the title: "The best time of the year is here; winter's gonna start now." It is a note on why I liked winter so much. I read the letter and wanted to relive all the moments stated in it to see if it really feels that good.
After having dinner, I asked Sarah if she brought any jackets or hoodies of mine. She told me that I liked hoodies very much, so she had brought quite a few of them. After that, I chooses one and wore it. Standing in front of the mirror, I realized that the first thing in the letter is right – hoodies enhance winter fashion very much, and I am not feeling hot even after having many layers. After that, I went to the terrace. It is a full moon night with a little fog around; I can't see many stars, but some bright ones were visible. The moonlight illuminated the surroundings, and the mountain view looked beautiful. As I embraced the beauty of the winter moon, a small wind blew, and the coolness touched my cheeks, making me feel really good.
Suddenly, Sarah came behind me, hugged me from the back, and asked what am i doing in the cold on the terrace. I turned around, and she settled her arms on my shoulders. I wrapped my arms around her waist and told her that I found a letter that stated the reasons why I love winters so much, and the dull moon in the fog is one of those, so I was embracing the beauty.
The next morning, I woke up before Sarah and went for a small 30-minute morning walk. As I stepped out, the dense fog reduced visibility, but that's exactly what I wanted. I sensed the coldness on my cheeks with each breath, and in the silence, birds chirped, giving a sense of relief.
I returned home before Sarah woke up, lit a bonfire, and started making tea following a recipe book. Once the tea was ready, Sarah, wearing a baby pink woolen jacket with her hair tied up, emerged from the room, looking cute. She asked what I was doing in the kitchen. I handed her a cup of tea, and as we sat by the bonfire, she shared some funny moments between us.
In the afternoon, I asked Sarah to grab some ice cream, and she agreed, mentioning my love for it regardless of the season. We settled on the terrace, enjoying vanilla ice cream, which added warmth to the afternoon and lifted our spirits. Amidst ice cream, we engaged in a long conversation, sharing stories from the past until evening.
Later, I mentioned to Sarah, "You know, besides things like hoodie fashion, winter moon, moonlight views, morning walks, bonfire teas, and afternoon ice cream, there's one more reason why I love winter the most."
Curious, Sarah asked, "What is it, Ryan?"
Taking her to the terrace's edge, I wrapped my arms around her waist and whispered, "The reason I love winter the most is watching a beautiful sunset with the person I love the most." We admired the warm sunset, and she turned around, hugging me as I held her close.
After a delightful dinner, we went to sleep. With Sarah beside me, sleeping in my arms, I felt incredibly fortunate to start a new life and rediscover the beauty of winter for the first time once again.
