Chapter Uno.
Knock Knock.
I sat up in bed, carefully putting the thick paperback I was reading beside me. Listening carefully, I steadied my breathing. I glanced sparingly at the clock next to my bed, the red, digital numbers read 01:29AM. When no more noise came I put it down to my imagination and settled back down into bed, curling my toes up in the warmth of the duvet. Grabbing my book I snuggled back into my downy pillow and fixed my eyes back on the page.
Knock Knock.
This time the knock was followed by a loud, “Miss Johnson?” I sat up again and placed the book on the bed before slipping my feet into the slippers kept religiously by the side of my bed. I walked slowly through the house, dragging my feet on the cold laminate flooring. My heart thudded loudly in my chest, who would be at my door at this time?
A feeling in my gut warned me that something was wrong. I peered through the peep hole in my door and saw two Officers standing on my porch, their faces grave. A million situations flashed through my mind, each as bad as the one before and better than the one that followed. Eventually I steadied myself and undid the chain on the heavy oak door. I opened it and was immediately met with sympathetic stares and shuffling feet.
“Miss Johnson?” One asked.
She was young and at any other time I probably would of acknowledged how pretty she was with her long copper hair and elfin features, however, standing on my doorstep at half past one in the morning I knew there was a more sinister reason to her visit than to be complimented by me. I nodded, “call me Ruby,” she smiled and held out her hand, “I’m Officer Davis, and this is my partner Officer Micheals.”
She gave a jerky head motion towards a bulky man standing next to her. Almost the exact opposite of her, his hair was dark and cropped, and with a sharp jaw and a thin mouth he did not scream friendly visit. I took her hand and ushered them both through the threshold. Leading them towards the living room I apologized for the mess it was in and cleared a space on the sofa for them to sit down. In turn, they apologised for the late visit.
I offered them a drink which the both politely declined, I walked into the kitchen and poured myself a glass of orange juice before I rejoined them in the front room. After the pleasantries had been exchanged, a sombre mood hung over the atmosphere, “why are you here?” I asked carefully, taking a sip of my drink and racking my brains to think of a reason why they could be here. My thoughts automatically flashed to my wild child sister, Katy, as I hoped she hadn’t gotten into any trouble and somehow dragged me into it.
“We’re terribly sorry to be the bearers of bad news Miss Joh- I mean, Ruby, but we’re here in correspondence to a murder. We believe the victim to be your boyfriend, Luke Fields?” She fiddled with her hands in her lap as she delivered the news, her thoughtful eyes searching my face.
I shook my head, “no, no… You must have the wrong person. It can’t be Luke… It just can’t!” I stood up and threw the half empty glass of juice onto the wooden floor. “Get out! Get out you bitch! How dare you come in here and try to tell me something so stupid and wrong! Get out! Get out!” I cried, tears running down my face in torrents as I realised she wasn’t joking. The horrified look on her face told me that straight away. Her partner looked away, gazing out the window as though the empty street was the most interesting thing in the world.
He hadn’t called in two days, he hadn’t dropped round, his best friend Kyle hadn’t seen him. It all added up… It all made sense, and it all hurt so much. A sharp pain shot through my heart and I collapsed onto the floor. The only feeling I felt was pain, hurt and heartbreak. Tears flowed down my face as the realisation that I’d lost the only person I’d ever loved sunk in. The room span and all I could hear was a roar in my ears as though I was submerged under water and the distant calls of the two Officers. The two Officers that had ruined my world, ruined my life and changed the course of my life. Finally the roar in my ears turned into a dull white noise and my vision flashed. The last thing that crossed my mind before it went black was Luke’s angelic face as her waved me goodbye Thursday morning.
