Elijah Alonso
I remember the feeling I felt when my mom planned on sending me away."I don't understand-" I said under my breath.
"Look sweetie, you got kicked out of your old school and this is the only other school with college courses near us." She explained, suddenly her attention was focused on a book next to her.
"It's four hours away, what do you mean near us?" I said irritably, "Why can't I just go to a normal school?" I asked desperately.
My mom's facial expression changed from frustrated to full of grief, "You know that's not what we see for you in your future," She explains "And anyways, wouldn't it be nice to get your associates over and done with?" She puts down her book.
"But the whole reason for me getting kicked out of my old school was for my bad grades. How will I keep up with this school if I can't keep up with my old school?"
"When you get accepted into this school, there's no getting out. Whether you take the college courses or not. I've already talked with the sweet lady who takes students in during the middle of the year. I told her about your situation and how you are looking into getting into a good school for a good education. She was kind enough to give us an empty spot. You should be grateful she accepted-"
"I don't want to, mom. I'm struggling with school so much, I just want to enjoy my teen years-"
"You don't have a choice. You are going to give it a try. At least the first semester," She finally looks me in the eye, "And if you still don't like it, I'll take you out. Just try, please. Getting your credits early will do you so good in the future" She looks at me with a pleading face.
"Okay. But if I don't like it, can I go to Mia's highschool?" I asked.
Mia is my childhood friend. She goes to a public school down the road, my dream school. It's not fancy or anything, in fact it's a terrible school. But it'd be nice, you know. To be free from the stress of college? I'd take it any time."Maybe. Or there's that nice private school over in Te-"
"No. If you put me in a private school I will actually drop out." I say, not really joking.
She smiles and faces her head down, "Then I guess you'll have to like this school."
...
I packed my bags last night. I've been kicked out of my old school for almost a week now. It has been heaven.
Honestly, I think I'm going to die when I get to my new school. A small magnet school? Towards the end of first semester? So embarrassing.
Woods Academy for International Studies. Even the name makes me want to crawl in a hole until 2050.Not to make things worse but, unfortunately for me, they have dorms. Meaning, someone has to have a dorm all for themselves, and I am taking that luxury away from them. What a good first impression.
I grab my suitcase, and make my way downstairs.
"You do not understand how hard it was to get that little Mooshu approved for your dorm." My mom complained, pointing at the large bearded dragon propped on my shoulder.
"He's my emotional support. I can't live without him." I say while walking towards the open front door.
"Try telling that to the administrators." She replies, following behind me.
She helps me put my suitcases into the car. I sit in the passenger's seat as my mom enters the driver's side. We make our way to my new school. Yay.
...
We pull up to my new school, my heartbeat suddenly in my throat. My mom hugs me tightly, "I love you so much. I'll see you in three weeks?" She's referring to Thanksgiving break.
"Yeah. I love you too." I say, trying to contempt my fear.
I give her a soft smile before walking towards the school building. I don't want to look back because I'd probably fold and beg her to go back home.
I am greeted by a tall man, maybe late 50s. He walks me towards his office, where I sit in front of him awkwardly."Welcome to Woods, I am Mr. Windsor, how are you today Elijah?" He asks, keeping his eyes focused on me.
"I'm okay." I respond simply.
"Great, I hope you found your transportation comfortable. I'm glad to let you know we got your – erm, lizards, cage. It's in your dorm." He says, stumbling over his words slightly.
"Oh, yeah thanks for letting me bring him. He's very important to me." I state.
"Yes of course. We like to keep our students safe and comfortable. Now let's look at your classes," He looks at his computer, "I see that you've successfully completed your TSI testing. That is great to see! So unfortunately you are a bit behind. Seeing you are coming into our program as a junior-" He sighs.
"Looks like I can put you into the college classes you need, I will send your class schedule first thing monday. If you have any issues with it then you can let me know and we can talk about changing it."I nod my head, "What about my dorm?"
"I have your room all set up. You will be sharing your room with Lucas Smith, he's currently in class – or should be. Knowing him he might be getting into trouble," Mr. Windsor laughs a bit.
He reads my slightly worried expression, "Oh no don't worry. Mr. Smiths is a very nice young man. He wouldn't be here if he was a bad kid." He reassures me."If you do somehow have any issues with your roommate, talk to me. Here are your keys. The dorms are over at the building on the next street. It was nice meeting you." Mr. Windsor gives me a comforting smile, and I make my way out of the building.
So my roommate is a troublemaker. Great.
Thank you <3
