Rory is more observant than he lets on. The first time he picks up on your little habit is in the store in the baking aisle. You two were on a supply run for cookies. You look through flavor packets and bags of flour, your mouth moving rapidly and silently.
The closer he looks it's apparent that you're counting. In multiples to be precise.
"...two...four...six..."
You pause when people get by to get their pick of groceries (or God forbid they simply stare at you) but nonetheless it doesn't deter you from your ritual. Rory thinks it's cute. He seldom brings it up at the risk of embarrassing you.
Though, when he'd finished baking at home later that night, he noticed you counting the batch of sheet cookies. He notices you pause, furrow your brows then count again. You fold your arms and mutter something before turning to your baker beau.
"Hey, Rory"
"Yes, Sugar?"
"How many cookies did you say you'd make?" you asked.
Rory thinks for a moment, rubbing the scruff of his chin. "Ah, I didn't have a particular batch number in mind, sugarcube." He leans over your shoulder, tilting his head onto your neck, "How much do you count?"
"Eleven."
He hums, "That's funny, I count twelve."
You raise a brow and turn to him. In his hands he holds the twelfth cookie. Your face brightens. You cover your mouth, though he can hear your silent recount of the batch to a now satisfying multiple of two. He smiles, holding the cookie out to you.
"A chef should always taste his creation." Rory says, taking a cookie for himself. He winks at you, "Same goes for the assistant."
At the end of the night, the batch was still an even number.
