Izuku sighed, rubbing his eyes as he listened to the child excitedly chattering with their parents two aisles away and the woman on the phone a few metres away. She was discussing with someone loudly about what she wanted to get her boyfriend for christmas, while the child kept pointing out wooden toys that they wanted to play with. It was so loud and he really, really wished he could take a hearing break.

But he was alone in the store and he wouldn't be able to talk to his customers if he couldn't hear them.

A glance at the clock told him he still had an hour and a half to endure before he could take his hearing aids out and enjoy the blissful silence that came with it after a long day of work. When he turned back towards the store, the woman had finished her call and the small family was approaching the counter that Izuku was standing behind. The father placed a wooden dog that had wheels as legs and a long stick attached so a kid could walk around with the dog in front of them on the counter, while the mother placed a stack of snack boards next to the toy. "These wooden carvings are beautiful, do you make all of them yourself?" she asked, gesturing around the store filled with wooden ornaments and toys.

Nodding, Izuku scanned the products in for the till. "Most of them, yes. I actually hand-carve a large part of the decoration pieces. And these snack boards." He gestured to the ones the family was buying. There were little flower carvings on the sides that he personally made last week. "That'd be 11,928¥, please." When he looked back at the family, he noticed the little boy's eyes shining brightly with curiosity.

"You talk funny," he said, head tilted slightly as if asking for an explanation. Immediately, the child's parents gasped and started apologising for his blunt behaviour, but Izuku just waved it off with a chuckle.

"It's alright, I know I don't sound like most people," Izuku reassured the parents, then turned to the boy. "It's because I can't properly hear myself so my words often slur together."

Frowning, the child asked, "Are you deaf?"

Before the man and woman could start apologising again, Izuku nodded. "Yes, I use these devices to help me hear you." He leaned forward and moved his hair to the side, showing his red hearing aids to the boy.

"Wow!" he exclaimed, eyes wide as he gaped in amazement. "They look so cool!"

With a wide smile, Izuku nodded once again and accepted the money from the father. "Have a lovely advent," Izuku wished the family as they packed up and sent the little boy a wave as they left.

Few seconds later, the bell jingled again as a man with purple hair entered, walking straight towards the woman that had been talking on the phone earlier. She was standing in front of a shelf with anime figures, one hand tugging on her black skirt that he imagined to be quite cold at this time of year with just fishnets underneath. The second the man got close, she let go of the skirt and fixed her pastel yellow coat instead, engaging in a quiet conversation with him.

At least it wasn't so loud anymore and Izuku could relax for a bit until the next customers came up to the counter. He decided to pick up the piece he was currently working on, one that he was making for Eri for Christmas. It was a little cat that held a sign with her name on it – or well, it was supposed to look like that soon. Right now, he was carving the fur to make it look more realistic.
