He was so excited to finally be allowed on a mission without Mr. Stark. As much as he liked the guy, Peter wasn't allowed anywhere without him. Of course, Peter still had more people than necessary going on this mission with him because Mr. Stark wasn't there, but at least Peter was being trusted a little bit!

There were some concerns Peter held for the trip, though. Since there were low levels of radiation, Mr. Stark wanted Mr. Banner to examine the radioactive materials in the area. Peter and Mr. Banner are the only two people on the team that are radioactive, and Peter didn't personally think it was smart to send them to an area that was radioactive. What if the chemicals in the area reacted badly with the chemicals in their body? It would be bad if Mr. Banner Hulked out while researching delicate subjects.

Peter no longer had time to think as the quinjet landed. The group, which consisted of Mr. Banner, Ms. Widow, Mr. Barton, Mr. Rhodey, and himself, unbuckled and stood up. They gathered at the door, but Peter backed away once his senses began screaming danger, danger, danger.

Only Ms. Widow seemed to notice something off about Peter, but she said nothing. Peter dropped down the ground and felt the cold metal of the ship through his suit as the door opened. Now everyone turned to look at him.

"You okay, kid?" Asked Mr. Rhodey.

"Yeah, sorry," Peter rubbed the back of his neck in embarrassment and thanked the gods that his blush was hidden by his mask. "My sense was going off like there was an army of bad guys waiting for us, but I guess it's just nerves."

Ms. Widow patted him on the shoulder as everyone made their way down the ramp. "Scared not having Tony around to watch you? I know you were excited on the way over, but it wouldn't be odd for you to be anxious on your first mission without him."

What Ms. Widow was saying was logical, so Peter shook his head and tried to ignore the buzzing he felt. "Yeah, I'm sure that's it. Thank you, Ms. Widow."

"Oh please," said Ms. Widow. "You don't have to be so formal with me. You can use my regular name."

Peter missed the warmth when Ms. Widow slipped her hand off of his shoulder. "It's an honor, Ms. Romanoff."

"That's not what I-" she sighed. "Nevermind; I'll take it."

They stopped walking once they reached where the others had gathered. There was a boulder a few meters away from the wreckage that the team was standing by. Mr. Rhodey was leaning against it.

"There they are! Hurry up, Spiders."

Ms. Romanoff tried to hide a small smile from Clint when the man referred to them. "Maybe you all should slow down. Anyway, have we decided on the pairings?"

"Yes," said Banner. "You're with me. Rhodes is on look out and Clint is with Spider-Man."

Mr. Rhodey tapped his suit to put his helmet down before taking off to survey the area from the skies. Mr. Barton walked over to Peter and directed them towards the section of the collapsed building Peter remembered to have supposedly been the tech room. They were shown a map that Mr. Stark had created from the setups of other H.Y.D.R.A. bases before leaving for the location.

Peter didn't know why they were heading towards an area that he would be highly tempted to touch, because he had been instructed not to touch anything unless given permission, so he asked. "Mr. Barton, why are we going to the tech room?"

"Since Tony isn't here, I've been tasked with trying to collect data from any computer I can find even half intact."

"Oh. Okay!"

When Mr. Barton asked Peter to lift a large piece of concrete, he did as asked. Mr. Barton found a computer and began looking for ways to plug in his hard drive, so Peter wandered off in boredom. He had gotten a headache out of nowhere and was hoping it was a pinched nerve that moving around could help.

As he was walking amongst the wreckage, something caught his eye. Peter kept his eyes on the shiny blue object as he lifted himself over a very large section of concrete. He crept closer to the object and noticed that the blue was water trapped inside of a container. Peter knew better than to try to break it, since no one really knew what the base had been doing, so he just crouched and stared at it.

The container could have been some sort of incredibly strong fish tank or something, but Peter couldn't risk breaking it to free the fishies. The radioactive explosion that brought the base to the Avengers' attention probably would have caused the fish to grow extra heads or something.

Peter stood up and looked around. Ms. Romanoff and Mr. Banner were nowhere to be seen, and Mr. Barton was very distracted with his computer. He sunk back down to his knees and reached toward the glass. Surely wiping off the dust to see what was inside wouldn't do any harm. . . .

The moment Peter touched the glass, cracks formed. He jolted up and backed away as the sound of breaking glass filled his ears. After a few deafening moments, it stopped. Peter sighed with relief, but his tranquility was short lived. The glass cracked fully and the large container broke open. Water was pouring out; way more than should have been able to fit in the container.

It was not fish that came tumbling out.

Peter had never screamed so loud in his life. He heard Mr. Barton running to him, but the sound was blocked out by the adrenaline pounding through his body. Speaking of bodies, that's what fell out of the tank. A disfigured body with five arms and too many eyes to count and multicolored spots all over it and its tongue was bright purple and lolling out of its mouth-

"Jesus Christ." His vision was blocked as Mr. Barton pulled him away from the body. Peter could feel his chest heaving as his brain tried to catch up.

"D-d-did you see that? Mr. Barton, that was a human! In a t-tank! They must have been doing h-human testing and that's why something went wrong. His b-body was all wrong. . ."

"Okay, okay," Mr. Barton grabbed Peter's shoulder and he noticed they were now in front of the quinjet. "I need you to focus on yourself, Spider-Man. Are you hurt? Did the water touch you?"

"N-no, I'm fi-"

"Code Green! I repeat, Code Green!" Yelled Ms. Romanoff, through their coms.

"Shit," said Mr. Barton. "Okay, time to get in the jet, kid."

Peter didn't understand why he had to get in the jet. He's just the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Why was Mr. Stark telling him to get on the jet?

"W-wait! Mr. Stark, I don't feel so good. . ." He listened to Mr. Stark anyway and found his seat. Sitting up hurt his head and his stomach, so Peter curled up and laid down on his seat. Everything in his body ached. He faintly heard a roar that could have belonged to Godzilla outside of the quinjet.

Sleep was not peaceful.

Woah, that chapter wrote itself. I was intending on making this chapter longer, but I've already reached my chapter goal and I don't want to set high standards for all of my chapters! There's not much to say about this fic other than I have absolutely zero idea what year it is. Tony isn't dead, Nat isn't dead, Yelena isn't hunting Clint, and there are just generally a lot of unknowns? Idk man, the lore will write itself. I'm basically taking the characters and past experiences of the Avenger characters and writing my own thing. Well, that's all! If you have the time, comments and votes make me smile every time, so leave one of you can!
