Draylin

I opened my eyes due to the screaming match between my sister Lila and my mom. I groaned and tried to roll over, however my cat Pumpkin was in between my legs. She let out a quick chirp and walked off. That's when I decided to get up.

I quickly walked downstairs and walked into my mom and sister. Lila was yelling at mom about missing her friends and mom was arguing back. It's quite funny how this doesn't bother me anymore. There's constant yelling in this house.

I understand where lila's coming from being ripped away from our everyday routines is horrible.

"Good morning Draylin! Matt is cooking breakfast." my mom says in a completely different tone than she was a few seconds earlier.

I shook my head yes and continued to the kitchen where my step father was cooking.

"Good morning Draylin. You hungry?" my stepfather asks.

"No, i'm quite nervous for school today so i'm good." I replied in a sleepy voice.

He nodded and continued to make breakfast. Matt was  a quiet guy who married into a loud family. I feel bad honestly. Imagine marrying a woman who seemed calm until she was with her kids.

I got a red bull and checked my phone. There were some text messages from my older brother Wilbur. He was telling me to make friends with the right people and to enjoy my last year. I wrote a quick reply and got ready for my first day at a new school. I yelled for Lila and we got in my car.

"Draylin why do you seem okay with this whole situation?" Lila asked.

"I don't know i'm just trying to enjoy this new opportunity." This isn't a lie. I'm part of the reason my mom decided to leave Texas. I wasn't the best child and that's for sure. I still am not, but i'm not gonna tell my parents about that.

Lila nodded and opened her mouth but quickly closed it. So, I just put on some music to get us in a better mood. We quickly arrived to our new school and sat till it was time to go in.

The October weather nipped at our skin. This wasn't Texas anymore with the 90° weather in October. Me and lila headed to the main office trying to ignore a few peers looking at us. We arrived and asked for our schedules. The lady at the front desk quickly handed it to us and we were on our way.

Me and lila had to split up since her classes were closer than mine was. I gave her a smile and she went into class. I walked to mine and opened the door to find only a few students sat in desk. The teacher gave me a smile and waved me to her.

"So you're the new student? What's your name?" she asked in a cheerful tone. I don't know how it's 7 in the morning.

"Draylin." I replied.

"Oh ok. Well you can have the seat near the front on the second role since many student have picked spots. My name is Mrs. Johnson." She gave me a sweet smile. I quickly sat down and put my headphones in until class started.

"Class settle down. We have a new student named Draylin." Mrs. Johnson announced and motioned for me to introduce myself. I quickly got up.

"I'm Draylin. I'm 18 and moved from Texas." I said with a smile. I heard some whispers and felt people looking at me.

"Why don't you have a country voice?" a voice called from the back. I heard some chuckles. It was honestly a dumb question.

"I'm from the Dallas area and lived in the city so I didn't pick up on one." this was true I never picked up on one. Even though my stepfather had a pretty strong accent. I mean sometimes it happens but most of the time I didn't really speak in a country accent. The teacher quickly interrupted.

"Thank you Draylin. Class let's give Draylin a warm welcome." Mrs. Johnson interrupted with a warm smile.

The class continued with very few encounters except the teacher telling me how to log into the laptop and about the lesson. Soon the bell rang and excused us to the next class. I packed up my stuff and started walking to my next class.

"Hey texas boy!" I heard a quiet shout as I was walking through the hallways. I quickly looked behind me and see this dude walking towards me.

"Yeah?" I replied looking at the boy.

"Do you play any sports?" he said.

"I have." I answered. I used to play football, Soccer, and baseball. However, I had to drop it due to stuff.

"You should come to football practice. You look like you would be good at it." the boy said. I mean it's a great offer since I wanna have a good Senior year.

"I might." I said truthfully.

"My name's Riley. You should sit with me at lunch. Some of the football boys eat with us." Riley said in a happy tone. He seems like a nice kid.

"Alright, I'll think about it. Thanks for the offer." I smiled and walked to my next class.

The same thing happened for the next classes. The introduction then back to class work. It soon reached lunch and I looked for Riley. I soon spotted him and started walking towards him. I felt eyes peering at the new student. Riley's my only option to making friends since Lila has a different lunch, but i'm gonna text her to see how's she doing.

"Oh hey Draylin. Glad you're gonna eat lunch with us. Our table is by the window." Riley mentioned. We quickly got our lunch and headed over to his friends.

"Hey Riley and New kid." Some dude said who i'm guessing is on the team. He took a long look at me, I'm guessing to judge my character. He was interrupted by Riley introducing me to everyone.

"Hi guys this is Draylin. I'm trying to get him to join the team." He started pointing at the boys and telling me their names. "That's Jace, thats Landon, thats Matt, and lastly thats Leo."

I look at all of them and try to remember names. That's when I set my eyes on a blonde who's looking me up and down. Damn he's hot. Our eyes finally meet and he looks away. He's probably shy but he seems nice. Most of these guys look nice. Maybe i'm finally gonna have good friends. My thoughts are interrupted by Matt talking to me.

"This isn't the whole team but it's most of the Seniors." This dude is Matt from what Riley told me. I gave a smile and replied. "Oh ok."

The conversation continued with them asking me questions about Texas, siblings, sports, and some explanations about themselves. Apparently Riley is the coaches son and Leo's dad is a friend of the coach and Leo helps out with managing and organizing games.

I pulled out my phone and texted Lila asking how she was doing. She left me on read which means she's not having the best time. I hope she makes some friends.

"Texting your girlfriend?" Landon said in a snarky way. I looked up and put my phone down.

"No my younger sister, just checking up on how's she's doing." I replied. He looked up like he was suprised i'm a human who doesn't treat people like shit.

Soon the bell rang and all the kids started shuffling to their next class. I got up as well and headed to English and noticed Leo was walking behind me. I slowed down and started talking with him.

"Are you going to English?"

"Yeah room 406." Leo replied quietly ignoring my eyes. I get the feeling he doesn't like looking at me. It kinda hurt my confidence but whatever.

"Oh cool." I replied awkwardly. We silently walked together to English.
