shoot that ball!!!!!!
It's a very sunny day. Birds chirping, plants a healthy shade of green, Sun shining. Just a perfect weekend. Gyuvin takes a deep breath, basking in the fresh heat.
Gyuvin finds himself on Ricky's porch at 2 in the afternoon, on a Saturday. There's an odd sense of deja vu that lingers, probably from the constant visits every weekday with Yujin under his arm and his schoolbag slung over his shoulder. But today he stands alone, with a basketball tucked under his arm in place of Yujin.
He lifts a finger and presses the doorbell as the familiar buzz echoes off the countless plants and vines surrounding the home.
In just a few seconds the door opens and Gyuvin is nearly a second away from zooming in and wrestling Ricky to the ground, basketball forgotten.
But it's not him. Not Ricky.
Rather, a tall and skinny elder woman with sharp eyes and a nose higher than Mount Everest.
It's Ricky's grandmother, he realizes. He's seen her a few times in the background either dancing to the radio or watering the front lawn but not this up close.
The woman sends him a warm smile, eyes widening in delight as she clasps her hands together.
❝Oh how jolly! Gyuvin, correct?❞ She queries in curiosity, cheekbones popping out in a way that reminds him of Ricky. There's a slight tinge in the way she says it, an accent that's too sheer to be Chinese but he doesn't dwell on it, blaming it on his ears.
❝Ah- yes that would be me.❞ Gyuvin says, smiling just the same. ❝Is Ricky inside?❞
❝Oh yes come in! I've heard quite a lot about you.❞ Grandma Shen says, eyes narrowed in a way that makes Gyuvin worry if she's being playful or genuinely wants to chop him up for some extra texture in her chocolate chip cookies.
❝Good things I hope?❞ He laughs nervously, hoping that Ricky was kind enough to not namedrop whoever ruined his entire house to his own Meemaw. ❝Nothing involving conflict? Because if he did say anything about us fighting he's probably being silly we're the best of friends if I had to assume-❞
❝You're the lad who set my Quanrui's house on fire aren't you?❞ She interrupts and Gyuvin's stomach drops because despite the fact that yes it is true, there's nothing more terrifying than sitting across a Chinese grandma with the knowledge that he might have just pissed her off and she might just beat him for that.
Gyuvin gulps, too humble to speak. He responds with a nod instead, watching as her face completely transforms from a sweet person to the second reincarnation of the terminator.
