The Prologue

There are choices we make that change our lives. I once made a courageous choice and that decision has repercussions to this day. I’m not saying that I regret what I opted to do, nor that all the results were bad ones. It’s just that it made a much bigger impact than even I imagined it would.

A whole lot of things happened my senior year in Hollington's Academy for the Overly Gifted. It was a school for supers and I'd lived there since I started high school, but the last year I spent there was the most momentous. The school was regarded with great esteem and awe by people all over the world. In it, we learned how to control our powers better and how to fight for the common good, but not everyone accepted that aspect of training.

I control the cold. That can mean many things: I can make ice, move around any snow-related weather, and make it a couple degrees frostier. My powers are pretty complicated, since there’s technically no such thing as cold; it’s just the opposite of heat. In basic terms, I'm a human air conditioner. Hunter once said I'm more valuable than that, and he's kind of right. But that’s not important right now.

My parents named me Mystral because it means, “a cold wind.” It's a very appropriate name, seeing as I lowered the temperature of the already-cold hospital room the night I was born. I got my powers before I was even two days old, so you can imagine the surprise of those nurses when they saw ice in my tiny crib the next morning, while I lied there with a blissful smile on my tiny lips.

I got to Hollington's from Tampa, Florida right before freshman year started. Wandering the seemingly empty halls of the Academy, I met Flor and Hunter. I saw him before I saw Flor, that day. Both the fact he was taller than her and his loud laughter brought my gaze to him. His face was so wonderfully sweet that my stomach began doing flips; I was so nervous I felt like barfing. Reluctantly, I took in the girl beside him; I figured she was his girlfriend and got a little sad.

The girl, her name was Flor, greeted me and I said hi back, making sure to breathe first. After the introductions, they showed me around campus and we became fast friends. Soon, we were spending loads of our time together. I rapidly discovered they'd known each other pretty much all their lives, but had never dated. That one disclaimer from the girl made a smile tug at the corners of my mouth, but I held it back.

Hunter became my best friend, as did Flor. I liked to think of him as my true love sometimes, but then I started sounding like a freak, even to myself... To my dismay, Hunter happened to be infatuated with Flor. She didn't think of him that way, which was the reason they were never a couple, but he didn't give up on her. Sometimes life can feel so unfair. Insert deep, heart-felt sigh here.

Of course, I from then on I wished Hunter would spend more time with me, but he was busy crawling after Flor. Don't get me wrong; I loved Flor like a sister, but sometimes the jealousy popped up. I wished Hunter saw that I was the one for him. I certainly didn't quite love him yet, but I was well on the road to it. I never would have thought such important things were to happen; things that would change the world.
