Chapter Six- Clingy
Hunter was annoying me to no end.
Maybe I was being too judgmental, but he was being too nice. And too clingy. I had seriously never spent more than half an hour alone with him before, and he’d never actually tried to spend time with me. But suddenly it was like I was the only person around. He would not leave me alone and it was driving me crazy.
If you’d asked me two months prior what I wanted the most out of anything in the world, my answer would have been “time with Hunter.” I finally began to understand the whole “be careful what you wish for” thing the day after meeting Bernard.
It was about eight that Monday morning when there was a knock at my door. With a grumpy growl, I blindly grabbed a pillow and threw it in the door’s general direction. I had already been unfairly woken up two days in a row and I didn’t want to continue that pattern. “Go away!”
“Myst, it’s me, Hunter.”
With a sigh, I opened my eyes and looked around. Flor was nowhere to be seen. “You’ve got to be kidding,” I grumbled under my breath. She was never around anymore; it wasn’t right. Raising my voice, I told him, “I’m not opening the door for you, Hunter. Besides, Flor’s not even here.” I snuggled into my covers, not ready to admit that I was probably not gonna get any more sleep.
My world came crashing down as he said, “Oh, no. I’m here for you.”
“Whyyyy?!” I let out a dramatic little half-sob, ruing my choice to come back before school started. At least I could sleep in at my parents’ house.
I could hear the grin in his voice as he replied, “I’m taking you out.”
Getting up very slowly, I made my way to the door in my old Superman pajamas. The tile floor was cold under my feet but I had no idea where I’d left my sandals. Taking a deep breath, I opened the door to utter a single word: “No.”
“Myst. Come on! We’re gonna do something really fun.” He looked pleadingly at me and it took me a minute to remember that I wanted to stay home.
I frowned. “Just leave, Hunter. I’m too tired to function.”
He ignored me, grabbing my shoulders and pushing me further into the dorm. “Go throw some clothes on. This trip is outdoors.”
“You’re such a jerk. I already said I’m not going.”
Hunter crossed his arms, looking down at me stubbornly. “Maybe I am a jerk, but you are going. I planned this out, okay? Put on some clothes and we can go down to my motorcycle.”
I gasped quietly in excitement. I’d seen his bike before, but I’d never actually been on it. It was the only reason I ran to my drawers, grabbed my clothes, and changed in the bathroom at light speed, much to Hunter’s amusement.
With a self-satisfied smile, he told me, “I knew that would change your mind.” When we were about to leave, he advised me to put on a jacket. “The wind is vicious on the bike,”
I snorted derisively. “I think I can handle a little wind, Hunter.”
“Alright. Your problem, then,” he said, looking me up and down. I was wearing some jeans and a t-shirt, like always; I’d never been bothered by the cold.
Once we got to the black motorcycle, Hunter unlocked something and picked up the helmet from the seat. I was surprised when he handed it to me. “Oh. Thanks.” I stared as he walked up to the bike. “Um… I don’t know how to put it on. And what about you? Don’t you have like a spare helmet or something?”
