Barton Residence – 2018

Natasha POV

A comfortable silence falls on us as I snuggle into Y/N's arms, my head resting in the crook of her neck. Her arms laced around my body as our legs intertwined on the couch. I don't understand what is happening or these feelings. We haven't known each other long, yet her presence calls and calms me. I feel safe, and I usually do not let my emotions show. Yet here I am, resting my whole body on Y/N's. Maybe it's because I have no one left, and I'm drawn to her, so it isn't hard letting my walls down. Nonetheless, I know I'm emotionally drained. This last month has been the hardest, one reason my walls are so easily broken.

Who do you turn to when everyone you know is either gone or grieving? Everyone might be going through the same thing, but we are all at different stages, and none of us want to burden the other with their grief. Although, shouldn't we be trying to support each other in times like these? We are supposed to be friends. Maybe the Accords really did divide us, or maybe we weren't truly friends, only teammates. When I return to the compound, I'll have to find a way to make amends or somehow raise morale. We still need to find a way to get everyone back. Plus, the world still needs us. Now more than ever.

I woke up feeling a heaviness in my eyelids as I blinked away the remnants of sleep. Warm rays of morning sun filtered through the car window, casting a golden hue across the interior. Confusion washed over me as I slowly became aware of my surroundings. How did I end up in the car? My mind is a foggy maze shrouding my memories. I try to remember how I got here as I look over at Y/N, who's driving. She looks tired, but I don't say anything. Rubbing my eyes, I tried to shake off the grogginess. I looked out of the window, greeted by the serene sight of the sun ascending in the distance, painting the sky with hues of pink and orange.

"Morning." Y/N turns and smiles at me. Her voice is raspy and laced with exhaustion.

"Morning," My voice sounds groggy, "Where are we?" I slightly sat up as I looked for road signs.

"Oh, about another two hours from the city." She replies calmly as she weaves us in and out of the cars.

"I don't even remember falling asleep or getting in the car." She smiles at me.

"Sorry, Maria called. She's getting discharged, so I had to leave. I carried you into the car." Her eyes don't leave the road, but I see a blush on her cheeks. "We'll pick up Maria and take her home. You'll go back to the compound while I stay with Maria. She's got another set of treatments next week." There's a slight pain in my heart when she says I'll return to the compound. I knew this was the plan, but it still felt strange to hear her say it.

"Okay, do you need me to pick you up for the next treatment?" My voice is steady, but my heart races internally, and I can't understand why. These feelings confuse me, and I know that everything that happened shouldn't have happened.
