Natalia Jennings could never blame Luke Hughes for wanting to follow his dreams. It wasn't like she had known him her whole life. Natalia had only met Luke Hughes thanks to their mutual friend, Ethan, who introduced Natalia to Luke when she stumbled into his dorm, bored out of her mind. At first, Natalia didn't have an opinion on the youngest Hughes boy, mainly it was because she was never gonna see him again seeing as the two were in different grades; Natalia being a freshman and Luke being in his sophomore year. Luke on the other hand, thought she was the prettiest thing he had ever laid eyes on. So that being that, a month later Luke asks Ethan to be his wingman in trying to swoop Natalia Jennings off her feet.
Ethan subsequently agreeing to help his friend, and teammate, win the girl over starts to bring Natalia around as often as he could. The Jennings girl starting to get closer with the University of Michigan hockey team, starts to get particularly closer to Luke after he offers to help her skate around in Yost Arena. The relationship between the two grew into something more, eventually leading to Luke asking Natalia out on her birthday in April. Now, Natalia knew everyone had goals of being something big in life; not everyone accomplishes it though. Luke Hughes was one of the fortune ones. Being drafted into the NHL was the biggest accomplishment any hockey player could ever achieve throughout their career.
Though being drafted meant Luke had to make what he believed was one of the hardest decisions in his life; staying at the University of Michigan or leaving and joining the Devils officially. Sure, he could've waited to join the NHL after graduating college but he was too excited on playing in the big leagues with his older brothers, Jack and Quinn, he chose the ultimatum. Leaving Umich. So, when Luke breaks the news to Natalia that he would be leaving Michigan for New Jersey before the school year even ended, Natalia makes a last minute decision when saying goodbye at the airport. Break Luke Hughes' heart. It wasn't her intention to hurt him, it was more so the fact she was afraid of holding Luke back.
Natalia also believed she wouldn't see him again, despite the fact his parents still lived in Ann Arbor and he would most definitely visit them during the NHL offseason. Though how wrong was she when Luke Hughes begins showing his face around Umich's campus, dropping by just to revisit his old teammates and see how things were going. So no matter where Natalia Jennings went, or how fast she tried to run from the past and hide, a piece of Luke Hughes would always follow her.
