Band passed agonizingly slow with introductions, seating arrangements, and rules. After enduring forty-five minutes of first day of school crap, the bell signaling break finally rang. I sat down on a bench in front of the eighth grade building, setting my horn down beside me and grabbing a small container of grapes that I'd packed. I looked around the break are and saw the reformation of cliques, boys attempting stupid stunts, kids reading, and talking.

My thoughts and observations were interrupted when a voice from behind me said, "You new here?"

"Huh?" I asked stupidly, shaking my head. "Uh...yeah, why?"

"Curiosity, mainly. I've not seen you around here until you hit my knee with your horn."

I quickly turned around to see a boy of maybe thirteen or fourteen looking at me. I took a moment to assess his appearance. He had crystal blue eyes, mostly covered by shoulder length, jet black hair. He was wearing a KISS tee shirt underneath a black button down with the sleeves rolled up to just underneath his elbows, dark black jeans, and Converses, and even though he was sitting, it was obvious that he was very tall.

"Like what you see?" he gestured to himself. 'Typical.' I thought to myself.

"Oh....um..." I stuttered. "I'm sorry. I should've paid more attention. I'm Leah, by the way."

"Andy." he grinned. "Nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you, too, Andy." I grinned back.

"So, what's this about you being a 'socially awkward seal'?" Andy questioned.

"Oh...um, you heard that?" I asked, and he nodded. "Well, as you've probably seen, I'm incredibly awkward, and when I 'fangirl', my hands end up looking like a seal's front flippers, hence 'socially awkward seal'."

"Ah. Hey, um, can I see your schedule?" he asked. I nodded, handing him my class schedule.

His eyes quickly scanned over the sheet of paper, and he said, "Oh. Cool! We have P.E., reading, and A.P. English together."

Just then, the bell rang, and as Andy and I headed our separate ways, he shouted, "See ya around, Leah," and went to his class.

I smiled and thought to myself 'Maybe this year won't be so bad after all.'
