21The allure of her
❍Mystic Falls, 998AD.
Niklaus Mikaelson had a hard life but it wasn't unusual, it was what it was, no need to complain about it. He wasn't alone in it, he had his siblings, especially his sister, Rebekah, and his brother, Elijah. They were the ones who cared about him the most, but him, he loved his little brother Henrik. It wasn't unusual for Niklaus to be screamed at, it happened almost every day, his father always found something to make him the only one at fault, he was hard to all his children, but Niklaus believed he had a special hatred for him.
That morning before the sun had risen his father left to go hunting with Finn and Elijah. He had heard his mother ask his father if he could take him too, but his father denied her request, saying that the boy was only a liability. That morning it was only Niklaus, his youngest siblings, and his mother breaking their fast.
"Rebekah," Esther called her only daughter, "help me with this," his sister stood from her place next to him to help place their bowls on the table, "Kol, what are you think you're doing with those flowers," she reprimanded his brother, Niklaus laughed.
"Mother, I've been practicing more, I'm sure I can bring them back to life."
"Who asked you to child," she reprimanded, "bringing things back to life is not the way of nature, everything has to find its final death," Kol nodded, "where are you doing all this practicing?"
"In the woods," his sister, Rebekah interjected, "when he's supposed to be doing his chores."
"Bekah, shut up!!," Kol groaned. Niklaus laughed.
"No! I am tired to be the only one that helps mother with the house chores while you run to the woods," Rebekah assured, he only kept laughing, "why are you laughing Nik? It's the same with you," Niklaus was about to contradict his sister when it was his mother who spoke.
"Why might I ask are you all running into the woods?," everyone was silent, Niklaus turned to look at his brother Kol as if asking him for back up, Esther noticed this, but Kol had a clear puzzled look, "you two!," she said, "what are you doing there?"
"Isn't it obvious mother," Rebekah retorted, "they're sneaking out."
"Shut up Rebekah," Niklaus said.
"Why?," Esther asked.
"Because of their friends," Little Henrik said getting the attention of everyone around the table.
"What friends?"
"The ones father doesn't let us have," Henrik whispered.
"Are you Friends with wolves!!" Esther was getting angry, "it's dangerous children," she said exasperated, "the reason your father doesn't let you near them it's because he worries for your safety," Niklaus was the only one that laughed, "do you want them getting killed?" Niklaus was silent now, "he almost killed the Erikson boy, next time he will, Niklaus."
"I don't see him anymore," he whispered.
"Then who is it?," his mother asked, "tell me!"
"Lilibeth," said Rebekah in a mocking voice, Niklaus was shocked he thought he was being discreet, but Kol, he was even more shocked, he never imagined his brother and his best friend were seeing each other.
"Lilibeth?," Kol asked in utter shock, Niklaus only nodded.
"Do you want her dead?," Esther asked him, Niklaus denied with his head, "then you will stop seeing her."
"I can not mother," Niklaus said, "she is my friend," Esther nodded seemingly understanding. Kol was not satisfied.
"You will stop seeing her!," Kol shouted at him, "you're going to get her killed."
"I can't brother," Niklaus said very calmly, Kol on the other hand was getting angrier.
"Fine!," Kol said, "I'll fix it," then the younger boy walked out of their house. Through the window they all saw Kol walk to the Erikson' and knock the door. It felt like all the blood in Niklaus' body drained, suddenly he was more pale than ever. He walked out of his house and ran into the woods.
❍
"Are you well, Nik," Rebekah asked walking to him.
"Go Rebekah," he said not looking up, "it's dangerous for you here, father would not be pleased," Rebekah let out a disappointed sigh.
"Sorry," she said and Niklaus looked to her, "I don't know what to say."
"It's fine Bekah, it was going to happen sooner or later," he sounded sad.
"What do you mean?"
"She was friends with Kol first," he said like it was obvious, but only he knew about that, "and he doesn't want me to be friends with her."
"And?"
"He ran to tell her to stop being friends with me!!," he shouted.
"How do you now?"
"It's obvious Bekah," he said exasperated, "and now she's going to stop being friends with me."
"You care about her," Niklaus nodded, "if Kol really is friends with her," she said as if doubting Kol and Lilibeth were truly friends, "tell him about it."
"You know how he is, he won't care."
"Why do you care about her?"
"She's my friend Rebekah," she nodded, "and she helps me."
"Do what?," Rebekah asked, she truly wanted to know the connection he had with Lilibeth.
"I don't know, she just does," Rebekah nodded, "I enjoy being with her, she's... she's..." he couldn't find the words, because it was more than words, with Lilibeth it was always feelings, and the ones he felt with her were more like a warmth he didn't usually feel. It was special for him.
"I'll talk to Kol," there was hope in Niklaus' eyes, "maybe he'll listen to me," he only nodded, "sorry, Nik, I never meant any of this to happen, I'm here for you, Always and Forever."
The friendship he had with Lilibeth was one that took him by surprise, he never expected that she wanted to be friends with him. She was always there, around the village always talking to someone different, always smiling, always helping around. It hadn't been that long since the first time they talked, just two moons, but very fast she turned into someone he could count on. She was a ray of sunshine so he never expected to have some of that warmth for himself, because that's not how it works, you go out and expect the sun to shine over you because it's always there and then you look at it from far away, but you never expect that one of those rays is going to share its warmth with you, it just happens, and from that moment you go out and expect to feel that same warmth, now he had it. It was hard to imagine a life without it, without her.
