The girl giggled, hopping along the stones that were drenched in last night's rain. The grey sky was a giant cloud above her head, with scattered bird chirps tweeting in the distance. The atmosphere smelled of nearby honeydew and fresh dawn. Weeds entangled themselves in every direction, embracing the trunk of the willow trees and hanging their heads into the murky pond. She dipped her feet into the cool water, tapping back and forth with her toes. Her lover snuck up behind her, gently touching his chin to her pale shoulder. She leaped up in surprise and spun around to plant a light kiss upon his lips, grasping his cold face in her hands. The April breeze whipped under the hem of her dress, brushing her skirt up against her thigh. She draped her fragile arms around his neck and sighed into his shirt.
"I missed you so much," she whispered softly, making a special place for this moment in her mind. After four months of not seeing Everett, they planned out a foolproof secret reunion in the Safe Zone. The Safe Zone was a land known only to the couple; they discovered it when they were just children. It was simply an empty forest, with no enchantments or artificial things to be seen. That was the beauty of it. No traps or censors were found, and that's how they knew that this place was off of the grid and was therefore nicknamed the Safe Zone. Since then, the Safe Zone had become their precious hideaway.
Even before the laws that brought up the need to use the Safe Zone were created, their relationship was frowned upon. Humans dated humans. Fairies dated fairies. Mortals love mortals, immortals love other immortals. That was it. But ever since the fated day in their toddlerhoods when they crossed paths, there was no denying the odd pair would fall in love as they became best friends. Their parents knew it, their friends knew it, everyone was aware.
Here's how it works. The fairies don't just stay one age forever. However, they are still immortal. Once you become old enough to make a proper, thoughtful decision- the age of seventeen- you decide on an age you would like to stay forever; or, alternatively, you could grow old and stop growing at the age you were supposed to die at. Until the decision is made, you grow as a normal being should. If a descision was not reached by the time the fairy turned eighteen, they would die as normal beings would. Lavender was sixteen, as was the human Everett. This tradition made it clear the consequences of their relationship were going to be catastrophic even before the trecherous war broke out, which made their love not only risky, but illegal.
Fairies and humans lived together peacefully on the planet Japonica. The fairies created potions and magic and all of these wonderful things, and only used them sparingly so not to abuse the magic. The humans industrialized and built up cities and powers with their vast amounts of technology. The two species never intertwined their lives with one another until necessary, and knew little about the other except for that they existed alongside them and occasionally passed each other outside. One day, a human scientists discovered the fairies possessed a potion that created immortality in a mortal creature. He and a large crowd of others demanded they share the recipe for immortality with the humans, or they'd shut off the vital supplies and trading supplies provided to the other species.
While the fairies knew this blockade would have disastrous effects, they refused to give in. They knew that the more magic was used recklessly, the more chaotic situations would occur. Shocked and outraged at the fairy's decline, the humans declared war on their fellow species. As the war turned bloodier and more personal, human and fairies were forbidden to interact. Cameras, censors, and gates were set up at every corner, keeping the two from meeting. If you were a fairy, you had to perform a spell every time you needed to get through the gate. If you were a human, you'd have a special key. Cameras caught snapshots and film of all of the actions of the creatures. Censors picked up traces of enchantments from fairies. Every possible precaution was taken to prevent actions of treason from taking place as this horrific war dragged on without end.
No where was safe for Lavender and Everett. Different sides had seized pieces of unclaimed land all over and used it to set up base camps and things of the like. They were unsure if their Safe Zone was really as safe as they wanted it to be, and they couldn't take the risk of getting caught sneaking around. For a third of a year they made no contact with each other, both desperately willing to give anything just to see their love again. Finally, they became fed up of the lack of communication. Through numerous coded letters, they organized a plan to check up on the Safe Zone again. After their plan was sealed, they agreed to meet up here. The couple hoped and prayed from the bottom of their hearts that the plan would succeed.
