Earth is no more. I'm saying this because this is no longer the place I grew up in. What is left of it are rotting bodies on the sidewalks that mysteriously disappear after all the flesh is gone and all that is left are bones. Even if you'd strain your ears and listen, you'd never hear a single creaking cricket.
The forests are filled with rotting animal bodies too, if there's any animal left, it will soon die too because nothing ever survives around here, one wrong move and your head is severed from your body while your limbs fly in different directions.
Lasers, is what I call them. The moment there's even a little movement, red laser beams appears from the sky and tear everything apart. That is what happened to my family.
I still remember it like it was yesterday.
It was my sixteenth birthday and the day couldn't have been more perfect. We were out in my backyard, dad, mom, my brother and me. My twin brother Lian was a minute older than me, so it was our sixteenth birthday. Dad named him and my mother named me. They were the most beautiful pair God has ever made in my eyes. There was nothing they didn't do for Lian and I. We decided to celebrate our sixteenth birthday as a family with no friends or relatives, not that I had any friends, I was the weird twin who was introverted while Lian was my complete opposite, you would swear we weren't even related.
We were about to cut the cake when suddenly sirens went off, signalling an incoming natural disaster. Except this wasn't a natural disaster. It was an army of red eyed Naked Face robots, at least that is what I call them. They are bare without any cover, just wires and metals joined up to create our worst nightmare.
The sun that once shone brighter than ever was now being covered by a red shadow, making the whole earth seem like an ugly crime scene, well, it was about to be one.
Thousands and thousands of armed Naked Face robots roamed the streets as if looking for prey, "what in the world..." My dad had shockingly asked, but we were all too stunned to answer him.
See, we were the one who were supposed to ask him that question, he did work for Artificial Intelligence Zone, an excelling company in the robotics industry. This was their work, they would do street parades sometimes, when they wanted to show off some new inveted work and call us all to assemble into town to watch what the new robot could do, their target audience and how much it was worth.
Looking at these robots, it wasn't a parade. This robots seemed out of control, like they didn't know what they were doing.
"Alice take the kids and go inside!" My dad instructed but mom just shook her head, "no Levi, I'm not leaving you here. Lian take your sister and stay there" mom said but my brother and I shook our heads too, "we are not leaving you two out here" my brother said.
"Let me call Mr Franklin real quick, maybe we have a parade I didn't know about" my father said trying to calm us down.
He dialled Mr Franklin's number three times, each time it went to voicemail.
My father was about to say something when a loud siren sound sounded from the now red skies and multiple laser beams shot out from the skies and started tearing down civilians. Screams broke through the air while others ran for cover.
My dad took my hand and yelled for us to run to the house, "dad I'm not leaving you here" I said panicking. "Sweety, go maybe I can figure out what is happening here, Alice take the kids and run for cover."
A blarring sound came on, "All F25s stand by" a robotic voice boomed across the whole neighbourhood, "Prepare for ellimination" what? My face paled, elliminating what? My question was answered when I watched as a Naked Face robot held our next door neighbour, Mrs White, by the neck and rose her up before a red ball of energy shot out from its hand and teared Mrs White's neck apart.
I screamed and fell on my bum before I felt my brother's hands on me. "All F25s stand by, prepare for ellimination" the voice instructed again, but if them preparing for ellimination meant them tearing into people's throats, what did the real ellimination entail?
"Run", my mother screamed to me and my brother while we watched as the robot who had just killed Mrs White jumb over the fence fluidly, with it's wild red eyes set on my family.
I ran.
I didn't scream for my mother or brother, I just ran with all my might towards the house and turned back expecting my family to be right behind me only to see my mom and dad's decapitated bodies on the green lush grass, painting it red.
My brother, my poor Lili, he would have hit my forehead if he heard me calling him that. He was fighting against the robot's deadly grip, the robot gribbed his fit attempting to rip them off, only to turn him to his stomach and his face towards me. His mouth opened as if to scream for me but all that came out was blood, the look on his face still haunted my dreams.
Then I did the one thing I still regretted to this day, I closed the door and locked and ran upstairs to my room, to hide under my bed like the coward I am.
I still remember the screams outside as more robots continued to massacre the whole town.
I remember I had stayed under my bed for hours and hours, until it was the next morning and my whole body was stiff and shaking from laying rigid under the bed for such a long time.
My face was red and puffy and my feet as light as a feather as I made my way downstairs. My shaking hands gripped the window sill as my eyes scanned outside, looking for any remains, and to my utter disbelief and horror, the backyard was as clean as it was yesterday morning before we even woke up.
One thing was for sure, earth was no more.
My name's Ilani, I'm not a survivor, I'm a victim.
