Does anyone remember THX? It was a sound system logo that came on before movies. I mostly saw them before Pixar movies on VHS. Used to be terrified of it. The sound is usually called the deep note, and there are different variants: DVD, laserdisc, and VHS... The VHS one always scared me the most. And not to mention, the company has its own mascot, Tex the robot. He really unsettled me when I was little too, although I was around 9 when Cars came out, so Tex 1 didn't phase me much when I slightly grew out of my fear. The one that scared me the most that involved Tex was the moo can.
Most people are afraid of that one because the logo shakes at the end, but I hate it because of Tex dropping down almost immediately upon the trailers beginning. Although from recent sources, it was the family favorite.
Anyways, back to my story.
I was looking online for old VHS tapes. I was going to order some for my little cousin, she loved Pixar movies, her favorite was finding Nemo, but she recently lost her DVD of it, so I decided to see if I could get her another copy online. I found one for a strangely low price on eBay, apparently, it was the 2-disc collectors edition. I ordered it and it arrived a few days later.
I drove over to my cousin's place to babysit her for a bit. Her parents were going somewhere and they didn't have anyone else. I didn't get paid but I didn't mind, it was family after all. Around this year, I was 17, and I just got my license and summer job. my cousin was 6 at the time.
I had the DVD in a gift bag, just to make things more exciting for my cousin. I gave her the bag and she opened it without hesitation. she squealed when she saw the DVD and hugged me. I asked her if she wanted to watch it now and she said yes. I turned the TV, which was originally on Disney junior, to AV, I turned on the DVD player and opened the disc. I asked her which disc she wanted to watch, and she said the second one because she liked the fish tank. I put it in, everything played normally.
What I forgot is that finding Nemo was THX certified. Before we watched the movie, we watched the short film "knick knack" while I ordered some pizza for the both of us. We're plain Jane's, we got cheese pizza from pizza hut and some bread sticks. After the previews we fooled around with the bonus features. When the pizza got here, we got a slice, some soda and we pressed play.
Again, forgot that the DVD was THX certified. Both of them, actually. The first disc had moo can, and the second had Tex 1.
When the deep note started, me and my cousin froze. She didn't seem scared, more likely confused. Although when the logo broke down, the light didn't switch on to a blue set like normal. Heck, Tex didn't even show up, at least not yet.
It was just silent for a moment, suddenly, there was a door slam on the left speaker. My cousin jumped, scooting closer to me.
Suddenly the scene of the trailer filled with water, almost like.... An aquarium, as schools of fish swam around and decorations slowly appeared.
Suddenly, Tex dove down, and he had a scuba mask. He flew up to the screen and his jetpack made the iconic whirring noises, but it was muffled. He accidentally bumped into the screen, startling both of us. My cousin asked who this was. I said it was an old trailer series that came on at old Pixar movies to test the sound, that the robot was Tex, but I had never seen this trailer ever.
Anyways, Tex shook his head, grumbling frustratingly. He flew over to the T in between the H, and he opened the side, flipping a switch. The logo flickered before illuminating blue. Tex flew up to the screen again smiling almost too much. Until the logo started to glow a fiery reddish orange. He slowly looked behind him, frightened, suddenly the door on the X opened and it started to vacuum up all the water. Tex started struggling to get away as the logos deep note played again, but slightly louder. Tex tried to swim away but the vacuum got stronger, tearing off his robotic parts slowly as he tried to resist, the door closed as there was only a few drops of water left. And Tex was nowhere to be seen. Suddenly, the logo melted and zoomed in at the ground as the logo melted, it almost looked like the T2 variant. When the logo melted, a sphere uncovered from the goop.
....it was Tex's head.
A title card slammed down.
"The best sound, the best picture. You're watching a THX certified feature."
My cousin was shuddering, so was I. I calmed her down as I got her another slice of pizza. As she watched the movie, which went on as normal, I opened my laptop and tried to search up the logo.
Apperently, it was a test animation. It was supposed to be used in the Nemo 2 disc DVD and VHS, but due to the fact of Tex being ripped apart from the power of the vacuum, it was recalled, even though it was supposed to be funny. It was considered to be lost media. When my cousin fell asleep I played the trailer again, whilst recording the footage on my phone.
I posted it onto YouTube later on, and it got a decent amount of views.
I then saw the description of the eBay product that I didn't pay any mind to.
"Finding Nemo 2 disc collectors edition with Rare variant of THX logo: Tex's aquarium."
(Idk anymore I did this with an empty mind-)
