Sora hurried to get Trellis ready. She quickly tried untangle his messy yellow hair. His annoyed blue eye glaring up at her. She tried to reassure herself that it wouldn't go like the last Star ceremony but traces of doubt kept creeping into her mind.
She did her best not to think about how some of the people who came out alone and traumatized or almost dead. She took a deep breath and looked at Trellis. He was so small. Even for a twelve-year-old he seemed smaller and more fragile than the other kids. Sora looked up trying not to think. She turned away slightly and a small shimmer of a tear slipped down her face as she thought about Stella, the poor girl that had come out alone. Her family members... dead. Hopefully not by Stella's hand. Sora didn't know how she felt about the shards. Certainly they didn't try to kill their families. That was not how it was. The twelve-year-olds in the trial wouldn't possibly kill people. At least not on purpose. Sora shivered. After all, they were only twelve. Right? She shook her head and tried to banish the intrusive thoughts that came into her mind.
As Sora thought she hesitantly looked down at Trellis. He looked faraway as if thinking the same things as his mother. Sora bit her lip as she remembered the last time she had been here. Collin. She hesitated pulling those thoughts down as far as they would go.
"Why do I have to do this?" Trellis asked sharply, pulling Sora out of her thoughts. Sora hesitated trying to find a good answer that wouldn't get him worked up. Though with thought she could find none. Trellis, sensing hesitation, asked again "Why are we doing this?" He sighed then he tried to get a stab at her "If we do this either you'll be dead and I'll be alone or I'll lose myself." He looked up at her again, "I'd rather die than lose myself."
She shivered, feeling a moment of panic. Sighing she looked down at her only remaining son. "You don't get this, do you." He squinted at her. "You're a special person and the stars think... they know that you are, so they asked for you."
Trellis frowned, his eyes glistened. "No... It's because the Stars told you to, isn't it?" She gave him a forced smile but he saw straight through it. "Why didn't you just tell me!" he snapped, "Then maybe I could do something to make the stupid stars realize I'm not a Star, they can't have me. I am not the type to kill just because they think I'm special!"
"They don't-" Sora sighed, this was going nowhere. "Honey, you need to do this. I'm sorry that you don't want to." Trellis smirked looking away, His face started scrunching up at her words trying to hold his emotion in.
"I'm still mad." He said firmly, quickly wiping a tear from his face. Sora signed sufficiently. She could never seem to get him under control. Then Trellis seemed to grow hostile. Sora glanced at the side to see what was bothering him and saw one of the stars that appeared to be a woman in a flowing wispy dress walking by. Sora gave her radiant–very practiced–smile with her green eyes shining. While trying to hide Trellis's hostile gaze from the Star, she didn't even appear to notice them. Trellis was still glowering after the Star when Sora frowned disapprovingly at him causing his attitude to grow more sour.
"They don't even pay attention to us!" Trellis examined when the Star was out of earshot. Not even he would dare to complan in a star's presence. Sora frowned at him. Trellis seemed to notice but didn't care. "I mean they don't even look at us, they barely even see us!" He looked up at his mom and fell silent looking down. She sighed realizing she was glaring at Trellis. Looking back at where the Star had gone and she felt different this time. She almost felt the same as trellis as she stared down the hallway. That star had seemed even less interested in them then the ones that ran the islands that everyone lived on. Trellis sighed slowly, his fear leaking through as they reached the glass box. This was the place where they would undo everything that Sora did and 'reprepare' Trellis for the ceremony.
