The almost wispy smell of grease and oil coming from the kitchen of the diner glided its way around the tables like a ghost of scents. Chattering could be heard from amongst diner-goers. The Old Salty's Diner was pretty old, but it still welcomed guests throughout these recent years. It was in rather okay condition too, being your average local diner, with the odd warm but cold aura and hard checkered floor. It even had booths and poorly designed menus!
A paw set a cup full of soda down onto the table, the ice cubes crunching against each other.
"So you're saying you saw something in the woods?" A strongly accented voice spoke, from none other than a weird.. White bat-cat-thingy? Her nose was a bit too funky and her ears were a bit too big and weird to be a cat, but her whiskers were too long and her body too elongated to be a bat.
A indigo-ish gray cat spoke, "Yeah! It didn't look like any other animal I've seen before!" She waved her hands around for emphasis. Her ears were back as she looked at the longer-furred creature.
"Eh, could just be someone from a different town or state. People have been going into the woods all the time since the last big monster sighting." The crow sitting next to the hybrid said. "Plus there's mainly, like, cats and humans and farm animals in this town, you sure you didn't see someone different?"
"I'm sure, Crew! It looked like an ee-guana, but all dark-colored with weird, long spikes along the neck. And it was BIG! Like a dragon!"
"Hm, that does sound unusual.." The bat-cat put a finger up to her chin.
The lights of the diner were a near-dim orange, causing a soft, but dramatic glow in the atmosphere. This greatly contrasted with the dark, almost black and blue surroundings outside that were dotted with streetlights. The grayish cat looked out the window, which was neatly guarded by plain red curtains. There were a bunch of trees outside ⎯ Collardale was practically in the middle of a forest, so that made sense. ⎯ bare to the branches, snow lightly sprinkled on the deep dark bark of the trees. There were roads and other buildings, of course, but the trees mostly obscured them.
"I mean, you must've been tired, it was pretty late out from your description." Crew sighed.
"You might be right.. Oh well, Mars, are you ready to go now?"
"Oh, uh, yeah Jim." Mars stood up, pulling her dark, sorta shiny jacket up as if she were afraid it would slip off. The others got up after her as she grabbed her unfinished drink and walked off. She waited at the dark brown doors of the diner for the crow and cat. As the two went over, waving goodbye to Old Salty ⎯ which was a medium-sized statue of a wild boar ⎯ Mars opened the door for them. "After you." She said to Jim, who smiled in response.

As the car ran along the scuffed black concrete of the road, Mars settled her elbow on the space where the side window was as her right hand gripped the steering wheel with a firm grasp. Crew sat in the back seat, with Jim in the passenger seat. It was definitely dark out, with the only light coming from the occasional streetlamp and the golden glow from the car's headlights. The three mainly just sat there, Jim looking out the window in wonder, Mars keeping her eyes on the road, and Crew on their phone.
It was the middle of December, so snow was laying around on the ground and roofs of buildings like a thick, fluffy blanket. Christmas lights could be seen on some houses and stores, their colorful blinks guiding the way back home. The moon was just a little bit over the trees, a white, glowy banana on top of the near pitch black sky. As the car took a turn, Jim hummed a little to herself. It was so cold out, oh so cold..
"Hey Mars?"
"Uh, yeah Jim?" Mars said, getting nearly distracted from the road.
"You wonder if.. That monster's still out there..? It must be cold.."
".. Yeah, must be really cold. You wonder if it's cold-blooded?"
"Maybe.. But that makes me feel bad for it. It could be suffering- or- or DEAD out there!"
"I mean, we don't know. Maybe it's warm-blooded and doing fine."
"I hope you're right.." Jim sighed a little.

"GOD-DAMN, I'M UP, I'M UP!"
An orange tabby sat up in bed, shuffling his plaid sheets off. He cracked his back loudly as he got up and put on a big dark coat. He pulled back the curtains and looked through the window of what was presumably his room. White light poured in, revealing the massive amounts of snow outside. It was only being added onto as it still snowed outside.
"Eugh.. Still snowy out..?" He grumbled to himself. He slammed the curtains shut and padded on the scratchy beige carpet of the room towards the dark brown door and opened it. he made his way down the stairs, which were painted a boring dark brown as well, with the same boring carpet on them. He was quick with his pace, not caring to look at the pictures framed on the gray walls. These pictures involved a small kitten that had pretty much the same pelt as him, a calico, and another tabby, definitely older than the kitten, but with a significantly grayer tone to the rusty orange pelt, as if they had rolled around in a dusty attic.
The ginger tom made his way over to the kitchen, with it's marble covered counters and ebony-colored wood cabinets. It was evident not many people really lived here.. It seemed he was just living here, by himself. He must've been lonely.
He grabbed bread from the cabinet, placing it on the counter. The cat untwisted the bag and pulled out two slices before popping them down into the toaster. But, as he pulled down the tab of the toaster, he swore he saw something move around the kitchen space..
He turned around.
Nothing there.
He sighed, twisting back up the bread bag and plopping it back in the cabinet. Maybe he was still a bit tired, he thought to himself.
