My ears perked when I heard a cheerful whistle coming up the stairs. I snapped the paperback book I was reading and hurried to hide it behind my dresser. Once it was secured in place I rushed back to my spot on the mattress on the floor. Four clicks echoed through the hallway outside my door before it swung open with a familiar and old creek.
"Okay mutt today was a good day so don't mess it up for us." said Charlie as he set down a plate of food and a glass of water on the floor by the door. "So good that Natalie and I thought it splendid to give you more to eat. So you better be grateful."
I nodded and said "yes sir, I am..." which isn't a lie. Some days I get a piece of bread and that's it. Though never guaranteed.
He eyed me for a few seconds and left, closing and locking the door all while muttering something about CPS and waste of space. Once it was quite outside the door, I shuffled over to the food, taking it back to my bedside, I shovled down the mini steak, green beans, and potatoes on the plate, sipping occasionally at the water as I do so.
"Well, at least im somewhat full..." I muttered to myself, looking towards the small crack at the bottom of the door. I set the plate on the , the moonlight illuminating my room, the bars on the window casting a shadow onto the door. "Why... why am I here?''
I've been asking that question for a while now. Why am I here? For what purpose? Why this way? I have lived with this "family" ever since I was 2 and I never learned why or what happened to my original family. Only that I was always told my family were commoners from a foreign land, just normal humans. Though I was never told what country they were from, i've always thought they were from Calcius, the land where humans reign and is the most powerful country to exist today.
Uncle Charlie and Aunt Natalie are Dividoids and said they were good friends with my parents when both families fleed to Utopia from war torn lands. No one knows what happened to my parents, or anyone else in my family for that matter. Only that they disappeared overnight, and I was left, wrapped in a bloody cloth on Charlie and Natalie's front portch. But now I'm 16 I have bigger worries such as, school starting again tomorrow, and that I need to sleep.
Standing up I walked to the window grabbing the bars embedded into the frame and, looking out to the hills. Lights from houses dotted along the bottom of the hill, climbing the slope. Nearing the top of the large hill, a lone house stood out completely dark against the setting sun. The house my family dissapeared from, never to be sold to another owner for reasons I am never able to figure out. Though I assume its just run down and considered a bad omen. Going back and laying on my bed, I eventually dozed off, dreaming of a better tomorrow.
The next day I got up and ready, collecting my school bag and finding my shoes, putting both on. Carefully I made my way out of my room and down the steps, making sure noone was around I made a beeline for the door, thankfully making it out with no trouble and to the sidewalk.
"By mom! Bye dad!" Called a voice coming out of the house after a short while.
Looking over my shoulder I spot Rose wearing her favorite black and pink rock band shirt "The Rock and Stoners" and skinny jeans, her combat boots making her just shorter than me. Natalie and Charlie had Rose around the same time I was born though we always joked we were twins. While her parents never liked me, Rose became my best friend over the years. Rose being slightly shorter than me, her curly red hair bouncing as she made her way down the portch steps.
"Hey eddy!" She called out to me, a small smile spreading across her face.
"Hey Rose, excited to go back?" I ask, as Rose stops and stands next to me, taking out a black hoodie from her bag and pulling the hoodie over her head.
