VI of Feathers (Swords) - (Reversed) People will cling to the familiar and comfortable, making growth painful. You are holding yourself back. Trust that letting go is for the best and will result in your growth.
James Fae, Ambassador of the Autumn Court, Advisor to the King of Nightmares, he of the Silver Tongue and Clever Mind, knows that he is incapable of lying, particularly to himself.
But for a moment, as the snow spirals down on him in sheets and waves, he can bend the truth a little.
Afterall, it's not like anyone would listen to him in this den of wolves. (Because he won't tell them.)
It is no crime to be fond of someone you have spent so much time with. (But it's incredibly unwise and dubiously ethical when she is your captive.)
He refuses to admit he likes her this much. (To her face, at least.)
Therein lies the crux of the matter. How does one express their feelings when by all outward appearances they are in a position of power. To the outside world, the relationship between the yearly Captor and Captive is one of provider and sacrificial lamb. There is an inherent inequality baked into the centuries old tradition.
And yet, he doesn't view May that way. Not when she has saved a Prince, backhanded a Baron, and healed him. Not now when she proved herself to be brilliant and brave and kind, even when she prefers the world to view her as prickly.
(Not now when he is falling in love with her.)
The snow clings to his cape and he hates that it smells of her, the reminder only serving to exacerbate his foul mood. Oh he'll have to deal with his realizations soon, probably faster than it takes him to come back in from his walk in the grounds, but for now he's going to bask in his ignorance.
It's not nearly as blissful as advertised.
