Spring was clearly around the corner. Flowers started blossoming, the weather becoming warmer. I hid my winter jacket at the bottom of my closet, finally bringing my lighter clothes upfront. I opened the window, getting some fresh air in. Things were going well recently.

I was up early, making breakfast when my mother came downstairs.

« I'm making scrambled eggs, do you want some ? » I proposed

« Yes, thank you, darling » she sat down at the kitchen table. « Your brother called the shop yesterday, asking why you didn't call yet »

« Ah, I forgot, I'll do it tonight, then »

She hummed, keeping on reading her newspaper. I looked at the clock, realizing I was late. I chugged the food down and ran out the door, wishing her a good day on my way out.

I was waiting for Michele to come out when Simone arrived, her hair looking wild. It was the moment to confront her.

« You're looking happy, Simone. Does this have to do with Eugene? » I insisted on her imaginary lover's name.

« Maybe. He's been really good to me lately » she said with a big smile.

« You know » I started, a bit more quiet than before « I'm starting to think you take me for a fool »

She blinked twice.

« Sorry ? » she asked, clearly a bit taken aback.

« I wanted to see if you would bring it up, like a good friend would. But you didn't. Seriously, Simone ? Jean-Pierre ? Do you want Michele to implode? » I asked her, slight amusement in my tone.

She knew it, she was caught. She sighed, brushing her fingers through her hair.

« I really want to tell her, I promise » she started truthfully. « But Jean-Pierre is totally against it. I'm worried about how and when she will find out. Please, Nora, do not tell her. I'll figure out something but I need to do it myself » she pleaded.

« I won't say a thing, it's not my place to tell her » she seemed relieved. « But you better do it quickly. If I caught you once, who's to say nobody else will ? »

« I know, I'm going to do it soon. But thank you, Nora » she said sincerely.

I smiled at her.

« That's what friends are for » I simply said. « Where is Michele, now ? I'm not going to be late because she forgot to wake up »

I knocked on the door, yelling her name. Less than thirty seconds later, she came running out the door, her jacket half put on and a slice of bread in her mouth. Everyone apparently decided to be late today. I offered to take her bag, helping her to look presentable.

« I'm so sorry, my mom didn't let me go before I heard her entire rant about me not being efficient enough at the shop because of school » she explained.

« No worries, we shouldn't be late if we hurry» I checked my watch.

Michele complained about her mom for the entire journey. But I could understand her, my own mother resembling hers.

We got to the metal gate and I noticed Annick putting her bike away. I waved at her, which she did back. Everyone, besides Michele, looked in a good mood this morning. There were no tests, no big homework to give back; truly a wonderful day ahead of us.

Wrong

When we got to English, Miss Couret looked excited to make us do something.

« I have the disk of the Beatles I wanted to use the other time. Now that all of you are here, I figured it was a good time to do it » she happily explained « I would like for all of you to get in pairs. You will receive the lyrics of one of four songs. There are two things I ask of you: one, translate the lyrics you will receive. Two, try to write 3 verses that could fit the song you got. You can team up with the person next to you »
