He woke just lying there on the ground with no memory of how he got there. James Dashner was alone on a deserted island with only one possession, a backpack that Minho has in the maze. So he starts walking around the island and it is totally deserted.
James wondered how he got there. Only one person knows how he got there and that was President Snow, and right there and then Suzanne Collins shows up in the box, unconscious. Out of thin air in the very center of the island there was the cornucopia. When she finally woke up she found something pointy on her shirt. It was the mocking jay pin that Prim gave to Katniss before she left.
On the end of the cornucopia there was a note : EACH PERSON TAKE ONE ITEM IT WILL RESET EVERY WEEK CHOOSE WISELY. James took flint and steel. Suzanne took fishing gear.
From there on the started to make it work.
